They don't pay us enough to drive and wrench.....though it is pretty easy to adjust brakes manually. Just need a 9/16 inch wrench to turn a nut on the slack adjuster.

    MidWest_MacDaddy Thanks this.

Yep. 90 years old great great coach. Only one ever to go undefeated during the season and playoffs. Loved those Dolphin teams even though I am a 49er fan. They haven't been the same since except during Marinos's tenure. I am so looking forward to the startup of sports again! Condolences Fin fan!

Yeah, me too. With an added y’all don’t pay me enough for this s$&!. Besides, I think I remember being told we don’t touch them in orientation. He must’ve gotten the one guy they have that is a real pr!@&-I mean prize. I hung up on him, not once but twice, trying to get someone different who wouldn’t be such a douche.

Lawd, have mercy!!!!! Hill Dollar Tree delivery. Contractor asks ME if I have a long crowbar so they can get these coolers off. Nope. Sorry, I don’t have one. (There’s a 4’ one sitting in my sidebox. Yeah, I’m a witch.) I’m a firm believer that if you are a contractor, you should have the tools to do your job. Never have I ever (ooh, lets play!) had any of the contractors who pull these off at WalMart or Publix ask that question. Plus, they’re on time or early. Not an hour (or more) late. Guess you get what you pay for.

Probably is just that simple... and I’m probably totally capable of making that simple adjustment... but the time to have that discussion is not over the phone when you already have a Driver a bit warm under the collar about the status of company equipment maintenance... and being a bit behind on time from the word go.

    I can imagine that convo...

“ok, Place the wrench on the Slack Adjuster”

“what’s a slack adjuster look like”

“well, how can I describe it...”

    “F this, where’s Loves”

When I started, like RC mentioned, I was specifically told that Drivers don’t work on Trucks... and if travel requires Chains to Shut Down...

If Knight wants that to change, doing so on the phone when driver is already late, is just not the preferred training opportunity.

Spoke to Mechanic on Duty after he fixed my issue... said “I’m being told that a Driver should be able to make this adjustment, your professional opinion?”

“well, if he knows what he’s doing, sure... let me show you...”

I said I didn’t expect him to do my training but he gave me a little tour and pointed out this and that and told me to move the pads down to meet the drum but then back off three clicks... (my wrench dont “click”... lol)

BUT... and this comes full circle to my main concern... he says while a driver could make said “adjustments”, this trailer is probably, while still legal, well beyond a normal shop maintenance trip... and he rattled off a few things he saw that indicated that this trailer needs to be looked at... and at which point of said review, the adjusters would have been adjusted.

    so...

if company was practicing good routine equipment review and maintenance, the issue of “band aid fixes” in the field by an untrained driver would have been avoided completely.

The problem with not doing a brake check and adjustment when needed, if you get pulled in for an inspection and any one of your trailer brakes are out of adjustment, you get the ticket and you get put out of service. Even though we have self adjusting brakes in the trailers and disc brakes on the truck, I still to this day stop and visually inspect my brakes whenever I’m going down a big mountain pass, like Vail, Snoqualmie, Cabbage, Donner and the rest. My thinking is along the opposite lines, I don’t trust my brakes with any shop or mechanic, and especially some after hours phone tech trying to tell me something he has no idea about. I guess I’m just really old school.

There was 2 pieces of important must haves that I acquired 42 years ago, a tire gauge and a 9/16 box wrench. I still have the same 9/16 wrench from March of ‘78.
