I wonder if there are other drivers from the Western states at Abilene.

I was worried about the road test the most as I haven't driven in years, but the person giving the road test was really laid back and put me at ease. I was expecting a strict DMV type examiner, but it wasn't like that at all. I didn't keep track of the miles, but the actual driving time was only about 20 mins and there was light hearted chat and joking for the duration. I had to back into a spot at the yard, but there was no pressure to get it right within a certain amount of attempts. I actually asked to correct it as I wasn't dead center in the spot even after the tester said I was good enough.

I had never driven an automated manual truck before the road test, but it was easy enough. It's a bit unnerving when they roll a bit backwards when you take your foot off the brake, but you just have to be quicker on the accelerator. Within minutes I was wondering how people don't like them.

I understand all about nerves as I was really dreading the drive, but don't let that put you off at all.

Recruiter told me we hire from most states.
Might be a good question to ask them.

Because they either have a very strong personal preference towards manuals (which is totally fine) or they have never actually driven a newer auto and just hear all the bad hype about when they first came out.

Or they just like to drive 11/14 with their stick in hand....

Not that Abilene isn't a good company to work for but you might want to contact @Chinatown too. He seems to have his finger on the pulse of many non mega trucking companies and might help finding something a bit closer to you. Or that run that 11 state area you like.

He helped me out with a few options and I ended up here at Abilene from that list.

Not saying you should give up on Abilene but home time is very important too... I would hate to see you end up with a great company but an unpleasant driving situation.

I have been in touch with Chinatown. Helped me out a lot but really only out west are the mega companies that will take student grads. I want to go with Abilene but not sure if I'd want to stay out East. From what most of you have said they seem to keep their drivers in those areas unless I am wrong?
