@JohnBoy If the Verrazano Bridge upper level is closed are you allowed to use the lower level? I took the exit and back tracked to 280 to get back to 95. Thanks for your help.

    Yes
Yes you are. It's usually closed for maintenance and at night time.

When the Verrazano opened wasn't it a single level bridge?

No it wasn't. It was built in 1963/64 when I was a kid for the opening of the Worlds Fair in Queens. It was built the way that you see it. You are thinking of the George Washington Bridge, the lower level was added years after the bridge was built.

We're both decks open from the time of bridge opening in 63/64? Our family used to drive from PA to Long Island to visit family and I thought I recalled only 1 level open from the get go.......long time ago

Went to the Worlds Fair.....and U?

    Was thinking more on this

As I recall, prior to the opening of the bridge my Dad would go thru one of the tunnels then surface streets in the Big Apple. Hard to remember as that was when I was younger than 10

Think we are about the same age although I may be a year older, long time ago but some things stick in the memory bank

I stand corrected, as per Wikipedia....

Construction on the bridge began August 13, 1959, and the upper deck was opened on November 21, 1964

The lower deck opened on June 28, 1969

Even this NYer makes a mistake occasionally.
