been thinking about changing the mufflers on my 379 and i was wondering about the rings that go around the factory muffler that hold the guard on. do those come off so they can be put onto the replacements? TIA.

Yeah they come off and can be put on a different muffler of the same diameter. The only problem I ran into was the stainless bolts holding the guard onto the rings. A few of the bolts broke or stripped the threads as I tried to remove them. The easiest way I found to reinstall the rings and guard was to put the rings on the muffler loose while it was off the truck. Then mount the guard onto the rings to line everything up and tighten all the bolts. If you got a extra set of hands you may be able to leave the guard on the muffler while reinstalling it on the truck...if not I highly suggest you remove it so it doesn't gouge the paint.

I recently replaced my Muffler, was too old needed a grinder and steel saw, and i would recommend to go to your local truck parts store, or Freightliner and buy new u-bolts, its not much but for long run its worth it

Make sure you use anti-sieze on the threads of the new SS steel bolts, this is standard practise when working with SS bolts to ensure correct torque of bolts and to help when it is time to remove them at a later date. SS bolts quite often have to be cut off because they bind together and you would swear that they have been welded on.
