Hey girls and guys. I'm not a trucker, but I would like to be one in the future if only I can find a decent fact about time off, that I'm hoping is, fact. Well here goes: My big love in life is traveling long distances but I have another one: Climbing mountains in the Canadian Rockies. I would always assume that if I became a trucker, that in the short summer that you get in places like banff and jasper, I wouldn't have the time to hike and all that. I mean I want to dedicate my life to trucking, but also hiking. Alot of people say trucking is a lifestyle, I know that but, I also heard that you can get time off as long as you give your boss 2 weeks notice first. I guess the time off would not be paid time I assume that but, how much time off exactly can you get after you give your boss that 2 weeks notice? Do you think some trucking companies will allow you to just take 2 months unpaid vacation time as long as you save up all that money while you were trucking outside the months of july and august? It would be absolutely my dream if I could combine these two loves together. Do you think I would have to be a owner operator and then and ONLY THEN I could take so much time off? Or is it possible with a trucking company that you can negotiate these things. Maybe if you work for them alot in the begining? Anyway, please everyone help me out, I really hope that this thing can be done, but if it cannot in no way, let me know. I have to know what I'm getting myself into. Thank you so much. And cheers! :)

Two months is a tremendous amount of time. I have been with my current company six years and we get along great. My boss would have purple striped kittens if I told him I wanted two months off in the summer. Any seniority gained would be lost. Imagine being perpetually on the bottom rung of the ladder? A long weekend isn't difficult usually, a week a couple times a year is possible, but two full continuous months is asking a lot. Too much to be expected. An owner operator can more or less do as he pleases, but losing contact with your brokers, customers and income for a couple of months per year is hard to imagine.

I would encourage you to try to find a job in the hobby that you so obviously love rather than try to fit it into some job. I think in the long run you will be happier.

trucking is all hands on deck for the summer and slow hiring in the winter when miles are tight... so that would be harder to do than wanting all winter off.

next is keeping you as an employee and keeping your insurance going. they might if you paid your full premium while you were off but I'm betting it would be more than you'd want to pay. plus retesting you drugs ect on your return....

    not hopeless but darned near.

Any idea of how much the premium would be? I might pay it even if it was expensive, as long as I can afford it. I'm ok with not having alot of money. Like I said, if all I have is my hiking, and my trucking, that's all I really need to keep me happy. It doesn't sound very true. But beleive me. It is hehe

Taking 2 months off in the winter for an O/O isn't difficult if he is specialized, IE hauls household or over size loads. But there is some risk involved. 60 days away from your customer base, is time for someone else to manuever themselves into your gravy train.

I don't know of any type of freight that lends itself to a driver taking off for extended periods during the summer. Unless you do the ice road thing.

Company drivers can take 2 months. But, it depends on the company. And the one company that I am aware of that would allow it, doesn't anymore. They only allowed 30 days at a time and they reissued your truck after 9 days.

Taking 2 months at a time will require you to work for a company that allows you to bank your days. In other words, you would not be taking ANY time off for 12 months. You get 1 or 1.5 days for every week out with the majority of companies. So 10 months would only allow you about 43 days off.

danc694u, are you saying that if I still wanted those 2 months that I would have to work for 10 months straight? That's something to think about (if it was true, I can't beleive I would be still leaing on yes......haha). Or are you saying that I would still get 1 to 1.5 days off every week like all the other truckers (and get 43 days off after those 10 months)?

Oh, nevermind, I see what you mean danc694u. Yeah I would at least be willing to try that for awhile. See if I can maintain it. What about the type of berths you get if you work for a company? If you tell them that you'll bank your days to make it 43 days off in the summer, will they at least lend you a truck with a big berth for those 10 months? Does every company have at least one or two trucks with big berths? And if they do, how would get allowed to drive them instead of the smaller berth trucks?

Actually chief, they get 6 weeks paid vacation. I looked it up once. But I don't know if that's still true. Maybe it's more or less. I don't know

As a company driver, that is exactly what I am saying. You would get NO time off between weeks worked, if you want 2 months at the end. Even then, you would have to find a company willing to allow it.

You're best bet is going to be contract, casual, or temp slots. Even that is not "exactly" what you are looking for.

You'll get time off as a company driver throughout the year. The HOS will see to that. It just won't be where and when you want it.

I would love a job that allowed me to take 2 months a year. But, Ive never found one. But, I want 2 months during certian periods. So it's difficult at best. The months I want, are during high freight volume months :(
