I am currently leased to a carrier but am closing in being able to get my own authority. I would like to gain access to a load board before hand so I can start to get an idea of what rates I'll have to work with. I've heard from others that I would be unable to join any load boards until I had my authority, this true, any way around it?

Most brokers don't post rates on the load boards, if they do it is usually cheap as the are looking for a sucker.

Truckersedge, and I think InternetTruckstop have a demo, that you can look at.

There are also a few free load boards too with limited loads on them.

It's going to take several years of watching it to spot the trends in your markets. Like whoopNride says you're not missing anything. In current conditions I would suggest paying for one of the higher tiered levels of DAT or ITS rather than the cheaper, basic versions with no features when you do get your authority.

Anyone can sign up...... Most time the broker's first question is what is your MC #. Bugs the crap out of me, what does it matter?

Or so they can look to see where your home 20 is so if the load is even going in that direction they know to low ball you.

What if you messed up few of their loads before, what if they don't take your insurance, what if your safety rating is bad. I would ask too if I was a broker
