I was let go after finishing up with my mentor because during that period the back of my trailer made contact with another parked trailer at a Love's while I was backing in. It was all very minor, nobody called, nothing like that. I have just checked my MVR and DAC and they are both clean. So my question is, how do I approach new companies to get hired about my previous experience with this last company? All my records are clean, but I still have to let them know why I got canned. Does anyone have any advice? I've already tried a few companies and they aren't letting me on. I don't know how to bring it up to recruiters. It WAS an accident, but is that the word I should be using with them, since all my reports are accident free? I really don't know how to move forward from here and I really need to move forward from this experience and get back to work.

Boy...I hate to read things like this happening to new drivers. I have yet to meet any driver who has NEVER bumped anything with their trailer. With that being said, honesty is always the best policy. Even if there's nothing on your record, if a potential new employer contacts your last carrier and that information is divulged, guarenteed you will not stay employed with that company.
Any potential new employer will be able to see by your clean MVR and DAC that it wasn't a serious mishap and hopefully one of these carriers will give you a second chance. Be diligent, but above all, be honest. Your honesty will speak volumes more than being caught in a lie later down the road if they start digging.

I think part of the problem is that as soon as I say "accident" they just turn me down right there and don't even get to the part where they run my reports. I need to get the process past that initial conversation, but I don't know how. I do the full applications and everything, but the recruiters just pass me over without looking at anything as soon as they hear that word. It makes me think I made my CDL A worthless right out of the gate.

What carriers are you pursuing? That can make a difference. Yes, the word "accident" does tend to scare potential employers. But they should still listen to your side. You might explain it, when asked why you didn't stay was that you didn't feel comfortable with the program and it was affecting your driving. If they ask you to elaborate, then you can explain to them exactly what happened. Just an idea...

I can honestly say I've never bumped ANYTHING anything with a trailer during my first year. Bumping something would have been a lot better than what I did..........:biggrin_25523:

By the way, not related to the original question, but now because of this I'm completely scared of truck stop parking. That's going to be my biggest hurdle to get over once I get back out there. If anyone has any advice on not having a nervous breakdown trying to shut down for the day, I'm all ears.

I dindnt bump anything my first year it was my 2nd yr and it was overconfidence I guess why didn't you G.O.A.L dude? I used to goal so much my fist year I was scared to hit something. Contact someone on the previous company and ask them what they are sayingwhen they get contacted by companies u apply to tell them to say something instead of accident because it really wasn't. Rub...bump...is a lot different than accident. Tell them you still need to eat n that its too bad they let you go because of that. Unless we are not getting the full story.
I took out the step of my cabover on a fence pole my 3rd day on the job and they didn't let me go they just told me to be careful and my record is clean so.....what did you really do man?

Don't refer to it as an "accident." Call it an "incident"

"Minor Incident" scratched a trailer backing in to a parking spot in a truckstop.

    Check Careerbuilder website.

    Keep the applicatons going :

    Watkins & Shepard
trans-systems (3 companies on this website)
    Apergis Transportation
    Paschall Truck Lines

Note * Do the online applications then call a day or so later.

when in doubt "GET OUT"... sorry to hear that they let you go for that. I got bumped when I was training my first week out with my trainer. The other driver never even acknowledged it. We didn't have any damage and just moved on. Your trainer should've let you go.
I would agree that up front honesty is foremost! explain bumping and that you should have GOAL'd also explaining no damage. good luck to you!
