I am devastated. The company thought I was ready to be on my own, I was nervous but thought I seemed as ready as the other new hires. Then I got out there and my driving fell apart. I knew I was making mistakes but couldn't get my act together. Then I hit a power pole. Nobody hurt, but I did significant damage and it was obviously my fault.

Now two weeks later I am home wondering if that was a fluke or was it a sign? If I'd had more training (nameless company only provides only 5 days out with a trainer), or had access to a mentor by phone after business hours, would the accident not have happened? Or would I be a menace anyway?

And is all this pondering pointless? Can I even get another company to consider me? Get hired driving a B truck? Do I need to wait three years? Five? Any advice appreciated, and please be gentle. I am beating myself up enough as it is. I really wanted this, am in a grief state.

Sorry to hear that. But u gotta dust yourself off and try again.
As for the accidents it depends on what unknown company puit on your dac if i gotten the phrase corrected. If so try a local company till u get comfortable confidence in yourself again ..

Don't blame yourself on this because almost of us had an accident during our first year unfortunately you had yours early but it's not over i have seen guys done worse than that they still had chances to show the company or anybody else that they are qualified to be a truck driver and they did better, if you think you need more training just go to a different company that offer more training to get yourself up or ask your current company for more training people don't know what is it like to drive this big ss truck, good luck and tell us what state you live in.

@ scream : sound like it wasn't your fault the pole incident. Find a good company with a better training program that can boost your skills / confidence level up. Good luck to u

My first month out, I hit a pole too. Just a stupid, stupid mistake. Learn from it and just keep trying.

Driving a 70 foot rig is not as easy as many make it look like. It takes a very special aptitude, learned skills, and devotion to the trade to get to a point where you can confidently do all the tasks that driving requires throughout every day. I'm of the opinion driving is not for everybody (can't be mastered), regardless of the amount/quality of training, and practice accumulated. Ultimately, only you can answer the question you pose. Whether or not you are now "blacklisted" is anybody's guess, but probably not but you will have to do a lot of searching to seek out another opportunity. Don't force it and understand many simply are not meant to drive truck, and many have to work ESPECIALLY hard to master the skills (the skills don't come naturally to many and aren't easily learned by many)

You are not finished, I would certainly get yourself some more training, Go find a company that will run you with a trainer, That way you can get more comfortable with what you are doing. Remember those steps of your truck are your friends and so are the mirrors as well and getting out and looking, I bet that one of these items were over looked/ Take Care Read my Signature.

I think 7 out of 8 drivers get in an accident their first year. I rubbed a pole on my second load, popped a tire and bent a rim. My confidence was crushed and I became super paranoid, which ends up being a good thing. If you like it, don't give up.

Oh yeah, and if you are a trucker for 15 years or longer, you must tell everyone you have never hit anything. I think it's a rule or something.

Do you mind explaining how you hit the pole ? Maybe you learned something from this. I am a wannabe myself and trying to learn all I can.

Was it while backing, while driving down the road or just turning. Is there anything you could have done to avoid this. I know it has already happened but would you do anything different now that you look back.

    Good luck, Keep truckin !

I am from PA. FWIW when I asked my dispatcher if the accident meant I am done, he said "Yeah." So trying again with that company is out of the question. Will go figure out how to see what's on my DAC, also waiting for a copy of the police report. I did not get a ticket. The cops seemed to understand the accident happened when I was trying to do the right thing., i.e. get off the road because I was almost out of hours, stressed out and exhausted.

If I do try again, I know a bunch of things I would do differently. *sigh*
