Well I was involved in an accident today. I was driving on I55 in MO and an old man in a mini van merged from the on ramp just feet in front of me going about 30 mph. I had nowhere to the left to go as I was being passed by another big truck at the time. I broke as hard as I could but it was simply not enough, I ended up contacting the rear left corner of his vehicle with the front right of mine.
Thank God no one was hurt and no one needed an ambulance or anything like that. Both of us were able to drive away and I was not issued any citations. So now my DM has me routed to Memphis tomorrow because I will need a new bumper so I get to sit around and wait for that and at the same time pray that safety sees things my way and deems this as a non preventable. Its pretty obvious from the damage that the other vehicle was not even fully in my lane when he was hit and the officer seemed to take my side on what happened but I didn't get a copy of the report, only a number so I don't know what they wrote down.
I'm just hoping this blows over and all is good, it for sure was the scariest few seconds of my life however watching this go down in slow motion and not being able to do anything about it. Stay safe out there.

Sorry to hear that, oncoming vehicles merging onto the highway is tough..Being a company driver means you are governed also, which means you are in the slow lane dodging these complete morons that can not merge. Its always somthing with them..What I see the most is they will actually slow down until you come to a complete stop if you let them..They forget or are just not smart enough to realize that they can go much faster then you and can just speed up and avoid 95% of the problem..I have gotten to the point where if Im going through a decent sized town im in the hammer lane..The guys that are not governed get pissed but Id rather them pissed then killing a functioning ###### who refuses to learn how to drive.
-
yeah I try to stay outta right lane in a town when I can but I had a steady stream of people passing me on the left for the last few minutes an was only 2 lanes. Real ##### is this guy just cut over the second the ramp straightened out, no signal or anything, just whip around the curved ramp at 30 and out into traffic when you have 100 ft plus of acceleration lane that he failed to use. Was a 78 year old man that needed a cane just to walk, and nothing against old people but he probably has no business at all being on the road. Hopefully he learns something from this and decides not to drive anymore before he either gets himself or someone else killed, this could have been much much worse for him and his wife.

Yeah the old folks are the worst..but Ive seen people half that age pull that crap.Just today a 4 wheeler merging onto the highway basically ran himself off the road.I saw him and looked for an out to my lft none to be had and so I dropped my speed to 50-53 and he kept dropping his..Once I realized he was not going to speed up,I did..But of course thats not easy in a rig and he had to slow even more..until he ran out of merge lane..This happens every day..atleast once..Agian,glad everyone was ok and I hope your company understands the circumstances, they should this is cronic and they will prob say to be more aware of oncoming traffic, which you did but thats the line they give and the best reply is(I will be more aware in the future)In the end thats what they have to say..

When you least expect it, safety will put you on hold and you will be taking a class. It takes them a few months to decide what should be done, and what happens will come with no warning whatsoever. I bet it happens on Friday, so that you are held until Monday or later.
You can also expect to be "randomly" drug and alcohol screened a few times.
If you are still on paper logs, wow, what an audit you are about to receive. But if your logs are good, then you're good!
There is nothing personal about what's going to happen, it's just the way I've seen Swift operate.neal79 Thanks this. -
Still on paper but my logs are good that should be no problem whatsoever. I had just came off my 10 2 hours before so not even close on hours or anything like that. Honestly seemed a little strange, officer didn't ask for logs or any of that just CDL and insurance. I'll also take the pee test all they want I know I'll have no problems with that either. Honestly I'm surprised I didn't get sent for one but no tickets, no injuries, no tow and I guess no pee test, at least that's what claims told me. Only thing on my record with my short time with Swift is a lvl 2 inspection with no violations. I actually have been Platinum status for the last 4 weeks. Thats what does concern me though is that I have only been driving for 3 months and this happened.
If all that comes of this is I sit a weekend and have to take a sim class or whatever I'll deal with that. I'm just hoping that they don't see it as me rear ending someone because that simply is not what happened and I'm pretty sure the police report will reflect this. As of right now at least I'm not on a hold or anything, I'm dispatched to go to Memphis for repairs and was told just go on about things and if there are any problems safety will contact me. -
You will have to take the close quarters class and fall under some scrutiny for sure with whiz quizes and logs. Good luck.

Hope it all works out for you. There really wasn't much you could do.
neal79 Thanks this. -
You did take pictures, right?

I have a feeling this kind of thing happens alot... I see it everyday and me personally, I don't move out of there way except in cercumstances that allow me to. If in a big city, I stay in the next lane to my left. This upsets many big truck drivers but they can get over it, I will not intentionaly kill someone, just because they are stupid/ignorant. I feel the LAW should be on our side on this one, since when is it a law for the main traffic to slow down for merging traffic?
mtnMoma Thanks this.
