Well, here's to hoping that God willing I never need the services of a profession that reeks of questionable ethics and assorted dirty pool.

As others have said lawyer up. If you have any kind of money in the bank take it out and put it in a safe or something just keep enough to pay lawyer. I know someone who was sued for everything he had. He lost his house and a car because it was all he had on paper. He was asked what happened to the 108k he had in the bank. He replied he gambled it all away and the courts couldn't provide proof other wise. After everything was settled he had all that money in cash sitting in a gunsafe in his 85yr old mothers house and was able to stay on his feet. Good luck to you

Do you have sizable assets? If not I wouldn't worry too much. A lawyer is good advice either way.

This is so easy, CONTACT THE INSURANCE COMPANY THAT THE COMPANY HAD AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. It doesn't matter if the company went out of business. If they don't help, contact the ATTORNEY GENERAL. You have a few options before you hire an attorney and if you do hire one, Countersue for the aggravation. Your way ahead of the game. Do your homework

Unless your rich which I doubt they're not going to get much out of you even if you show up without a lawyer. The judge will say something like, pay them $12.00 a month until your $100,000 settlement is done. Then make a few payments then stop. It will require them to file in the court then pay a sheriff to serve you a warrant to appear in court...(If they can find you). Must be served in person. Then the judge will say what's wrong, you must pay. You say OK and go on your way. This can go on forever. They aren't going to put you into an over crowded jail for this. The other party will just go away. Unless they are stupid they will realize you HAVE NOTHING!!

And all you idiots on here that say hire a good lawyer. What the F are you smoking. You're not even going to talk to a lawyer. A paralegal at best who will pass on your info to a lawyer 2 weeks out of school. Since the law firm is only going to make money off you they will ask for a retainer up front to even talk to you. We're talking maybe $1,500 to start. That's just to START!

A lawyer charges by the minute. Every copy they make at the copy machine is $12 a page and so on.

I would agree with this unless he owns property or has a sizeable amount of money in the bank.

I agree but I'm guessing not. I have a friend who went through suing a contractor. Took her 7 years to get back $2,500. I can't count the number of times she had to hire the sheriff to serve a warrant to appear in court. The only thing the judge would do is say to pay her so much a month. He had a house, truck and equipment but the court would not allow her to take any of those to get her money back.

And I would add to this... a decent credit score. That's a hard thing to rebuild and takes a long time.

You have to answer the suit. It's a given. All the others have posted what I would have.

If you have funds in the bank, get it out and toss it into a good safe (Not a crappy 20 dollar walmart one...)

Lawyer up. And be prepared to pay up for said lawyer.
