An elderly lady in a grocery store parking lot, hit my Thunderbird Super Coupe and put a dent in the body just behind the passenger door. She was almost in tears and said "Should we call the police? I'll show you my insurance policy."
I said, "I like my car, but don't love my car." I said, "Just be careful so you don't get hurt; forget about this and get home safe."
No, I didn't report it to my insurance company and when I sold the car the dent was still there.
But, that's just me. I look at the big picture and in the big scheme of life, that dent was meaningless.

I know. I was piggy backing off your post, the scenario was for the driver with the no snitch policy, not you. I just thought it would be easier to present both scenarios close together. Sorry for the confusion.

And if she damaged the car to the point that you had no choice but to repair it, would you still have said no big deal and left her go needing to spend a couple thousand to fix it yourself? I don’t think so, and this is also your property not someone else’s.

I have a slightly crooked bumper on my Jeep because I let someone drive away without reporting to insurance. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest but I must say if it belonged to someone else and she hit me I don’t have the right to dictate that someone else live with a crooked bumper no matter how petty I think it is.

By the way I still recomend you document everything at the seen and take pics because someone could turn the corner and decide to lie and claim you hit them and drove off. In the situation with my Jeep my bumper was slightly moved, loosen a few bolts and move it back. Her car needed everything back to the radiator replaced so for some unethical person the thought of shifting blame could be tempting.

That didn't happen though. I don't overthink or become paranoid over issues.
One time at a truck stop a driver ran up to me and said, "See that truck there with the trailer door open? He's selling drugs from the back of the trailer and I've been watching drivers buy the drugs."
    I said, "I don't really give a ####."
He called the police and was strutting around like he's some hero. The police arrived and discovered several truckers from the same company had food stored in a cooler in that trailer and were simply getting some food to eat. Much ado about nothing.

Far from being paranoid, just sane advice for people in a screwed up world.

I probably would have ignored your described scenario myself, but what does it have to do with witnessing someone actually doing damage to other people’s property, your personal property or a companies property. I would say your stretching to try and justify yourself and failing miserably!

Not trying to justify anything; that's just the way I've lived my life since my teens.

Pulled over by the police one day long ago, was told to get out of the truck.
Cop then said she was pulling me over for drinking and driving.
I laughed, but she was so serious.
Said a guy called in and reported me having had lunch just up the highway at a pub.
I told her I ate there frequently, they have great food, but only drank water.
Showed her my receipt that said burger, salad, and water.
She had me do the usual tricks like walk a straight line, close my eyes and touch my nose.
    Then she let me go.

People should worry about themselves more, and others less.

An illegal detention and a fireable offense. It's ok for John Q. Public to alert law enforcement but the burden of reasonable suspicion still falls to the officer. The "witness" doesn't matter and you got pulled over by a crappy cop that day.

Always report crappy cops. Too much potential for bad outcomes. I got a local deputy fired when i found out he asked my wifes friend for her Social Security card for driving while born 3rd generation American Latino. The easy part was all i needed to do was inform a detective i knew from the old sandbox days.

Stupid & ignorant people doom themselves. Partial disassembly may be required.

It's how weasels think they can get ahead. In truth, their bosses don't respect them and will never trust them.
