According to the stats from school, 80% of all accidents occur while backing........surprised me too!
Probably more equipment damage than personal injury would occur while backing, based on some of the light poles and door frames I see on buildings I back in, and the bent bumpers I see my co-workers creating on a weekly basis.
I drove in a rainstorm today, and could not see a thing going on behind me, and could barely change lanes safely....a couple of times could see an accident waiting to happen ahead of me... I changed lanes once to avoid a trailer that was slowing and I could not tell their brake lights were on and turn signal was on. I wasn't speeding, but was probably going too fast...was on the way home and was probaby going too fast. -
Q: ACCIDENTS: What are the top causes?
A: Driver stupidity. -
Most highway accidents can be avoided with proper following distance, imho.
CHP says in traffic its improper lane changes, Holidays drinking. -
Everybody has made valid points here on this issue. For me I waould have to list several reasons and they are in no particular order
1. Agressive ( loss of respect for the road)
2. Following too close
3. Speed and the lack there of. a slow truck in the middle lane is a hazard if you can do the speed limit do it or stay in the right lane except to move over because of emergency vehicle
4. Stupidity
5. drugs and alcohol ( mainly towards 4 wheelers)
6. driving while tired ( exceeding your personal limit)
7. self importance
8.distracted get a blue tooth drivers or dont talk on the phone while your driving your rig no excuse is good enough
These are just some things I personally feel are responsible for some of the accidents on the highways. I think all these items are preventable if we just put some common sense to use and act a bit more responsible. I myself have been guilty of some of these items and strive to not make the mistakes again. I have been lucky and not had any accidents and hope that I dont have any.
Be safe my fellow drivers
