    I absolutely agree it is going to be difficult. What I do in the Navy doesn't even come close to the truck driving industry. I am starting 3 years early to hopefully prepare myself as much as possible for the change. You're right, not much part time work out there to build my skills...found one class A CDL part time job delivering sand to the local shipyards. Probably would end up being a conflict of interest with my current job working for the Navy at a shipyard anyway. Hoping to learn all I can to prepare myself for my next career. Thanks so much for your advice!

    I would wait until your close to your retirement. I got mine with the GI Bill and let them pay for it. Do some research and find the best one for you. Doesn't matter how expensive it is... You've earned it, so might as well use it.

    But If you start off with a bigger company you WILL need to do some refresher training. So you might as well do it while you have it all fresh in your head.

    ... Once you get into the retirement agenda you will get all the pertinent info you need on all the bennies during transition.. But if your like me and have the Post 911 GI Bill, it' only good for 10 years after you start your first course. So if you only get your CDL and nothing more then after 10 years, it will go away.

    But yes, it's daunting, it's eye opening... your scared S^^%less. But it will get better. It will fade. Life out here isn't bad, it just takes a LOT of adjustment for those of us who have made the military a life. Like you, I retired with 24 years in the US Navy , so I can say this honestly...

    Thank you for your continued service... and I look forward to seeing you out here one day.

    What is your MOS right now ?

    I can fully relate brother. I was a 4T071 Medical Lab Tech for 20 years in the USAF. Spent the next 15 with the VA in the same capacity. I retired early from the VA..... it's a hell-hole on earth that place is. NOT for the healthcare (which is actually decent), but the total lack of any frontline Leadership. Simply does not exist in the VA.

    Sure it wasn't Class B ? Was it pulling a trailer or was it a Dump truck ? What experience did they require ?

    Looking at your user name, would you happen to have been a Navy Nuke?

    Your still eligible. 21 years in the military is worth something. You will bring more to the table. IMO, veterans make excellent truckers. Pride in your job, time management being a biggie, discipline, fast pace learner. You'll find this job easy as cake. Driving the truck is the easy part. What's your mos? I was a scout, so operating mraps and such definitely carried over to this field

    I am a nuclear power officer currently, was a prior Chief Machinist's Mate prior to my commission. The job posted was class A, but just local to the shipyards and lacked any real information. I am sure there would not be any real way to gain any experience around my schedule outside of the training school itself.

    100% Agreed ! Thank you for your Service as well brother.

    THIS ---->>>
    The Civilian world is a nightmare compared to the structured, discipline we experienced in the Military. It's all about Leadership and Professionalism. That simply does not exists (for the most part) outside the Military. It's all about feeding the Corporate pigs at the top of the food chain.

    The trucking industry eats it's young ! Lol !
