I am just a single Owner Op with own Authority. Have new truck coming in first of next year and been thinking I might keep my older truck and put a driver in it.

I have put a lot of money in my current truck 2014 Volvo 670 D13. It has almost 850,000 miles on it but it has only 200,000 on rebuilt engine and still under Volvo factory warranty till end of next year with the 3 year 350,000. Almost everything on DEF system has been replaced in the last two years as well. So it is a solid truck now. Good news is truck will be paid in full so no payment.

Problem Is no extra trailers so would have to do power only at first until I could find another trailer. Have not done enough research to figure out any kind of rates. I am out of KCMO area if that matters.
I do everything on booking loads and paperwork. So would add extra work to me regardless but could be worth it. But selling the truck could be the right way to go with truck prices crazy right now.

    Questions
How do you send info to other driver when booking loads? Like on some brokers when you use the apps it just ask to assign drivers. That would be just setting up drivers like myself on the app and sending them to be the driver.

On BOLs once delivered and invoiced do you just have them scan it in the app and also scan it in like Keep Trucking Eld and use that to Invoice? Anything else that makes dispatching hard to do when you are driving and dispatch someone else? I know setting up loads will be a challenge but do able most times.

Amy extra insight would be great. PS I understand the driver issue so not worried about that situation as this will have no barring on if I decided to do this or not.

If it were me I would just get rid of the other truck and pocket the money and put that towards the truck you bought, rather than messing with drivers and power only and all that nonsense. If you've done a lot of work to the truck you will probably get a real premium for it that you're not going to get a year or so from now when you've had multiple drivers quit in the truck's been sitting and you're paying insurance on it...

But if I was going to have a driver I would do all the rate cons and I suppose I would put my own number in there so they contact me for the update so I'm within the loop. Then you can contact your driver and get back to them. This way you're not getting a phone call 3 days later from the broker saying he never heard from your driver and you find out your truck is abandoned in Bumfak nowhere.

I would just scan the rate con for the address information and pick up numbers and whatever for the driver. He can send you a copy of the bol as soon as he's done with the load by scanning it in a CamScanner app and emailing it to you and you can Bill them right away.

All of that sounds like a giant pain in the rear end. I would take the money from the truck and enjoy your peace of mind.

    Good luck.

Oh no you don’t, believe me driver issues are getting bad for many of us.

That said … I would consider getting the truck leased under another company and let them do the dispatch and back office stuff.

Oh believe me I do understand how hard and what a pain in the ### it will be with getting a good driver. Hint the reason I am really more considering just selling it and just move on. But I also know if I ever want to grow this is a good time to do so as I will have the truck paid off and it is in good shape to be a good truck for a little longer.

So if I was to lease it to another company what would I be responsible for? Will need to do some research on that as I honestly have never considered that. So would I basically be giving them the truck and they put driver in? I would be responsible for maintaining truck?

This is something I really am thinking about doing is just sell truck. I will get a good chunk of money and could stash back for when the time is right to get another truck and trailer to do it right. But if I want to grow this is my chance to do so since the truck would be paid for and is in really good shape.

If everyone listened to the naysayers there would only be single operators. Or there would only be company drivers. No such thing as a good time/bad time. You decide if the risk is worth the gain, sometimes you'll win, sometimes you'll lose. It's an all in approach if you do it.

If I had another dry Van it would be a no brainer for me to go ahead and do it. I cant see paying 50-60 k for a new used dry van at this point. So I guess my only real options are run power only under my numbers or lease out to someone that has trailers. I don't really like the idea of leasing out since I wont have full control over everything . Could work out though so am looking into it now.

Plenty of places that you can lease on and still control what the truck does. You'll just sleep less. LOL A lot easier now than it was 40 years ago.(having a list of payphone #'s in out of the way places where you would stop and wait for drivers calls and arrange loads)

So just wondering if anyone thinks the Big trucking companies are gonna have a hard time moving freight when there Vax Mandate takes place? I am guessing this may be a good deal for me to do the Power Only thing and may make getting a decent driver a little easier since I would not require it. Just spitting ideas out???????
