I want to add air lockers to my rear diffs, sqhd. Is this just a matter of finding the right center section and swapping them out or is there more to it? Different housings? Different axles? Etc.

Sqhd are perty old. They never came with air lockers. You would have to upgrade to newer style rears to accomplish that. Like swap out everything.

Couldn't a guy still put in a Detroit locker (zero spin I think they're called)? Do they even still make those?

I had a friend put one those in his Eaton 402 rear diff. Never was overly happy with it. Not sure if they even make them anymore. -
My old man put one in his rear SSHD when he converted a highway tractor to a logging truck. That was 25 years ago though.

Yes well they worked good for what they were. You got to remember back then there was no such thing as air lockers only interlock, so those Detroit lockers were the kool kid on the block.
Now no need , as every new truck can be speced with 4 way lockers.
