I never knew that was possible.
What would cause an engine to run backwards?

On my A model I was pulling out of a steep dock. I let the clutch out without any throttle, it started to stall and I stabbed the clutch. I must have done it just as it started to roll backwards, but like @wore out said, seeing exhaust out of the filters is an unusual experience. It didn't take me too long to figure it out though.

It almost snuffs itself out rocks backwards and starts in reverse rotation. It takes a mechanical fuel system of course. Your intake becomes your exhaust and the exhaust becomes the intake. They are sluggish as #### and won’t run long due to the oil pump quits pumping or won’t pump turning reverse.

I’ve heard rumors of detroits running backwards long enough that the alternator runs the batteries down and recharge them reverse polarity but don’t believe that mess. They won’t run but a minute or 2 if you don’t snuff em out.

My CAT happened in a Nashville backup. Low became reverse. I killed it restarted it and it was fine. I learned that day a good way to tear #### up was letting emotion get you.

Now while they are running backwards you bet turbo spins. But the air flow is flowing through the entire engine.

The reason air running down the exhaust pipe at 60mph won’t spin a turbo is it has no where to go it hits the exhaust valves and that’s it. Even if your on overlap the amount of air that will come through that cylinder isn’t gonna spin it.

Really look at a turbo housing you’ll see what I mean. If you honest to God understand how one works it will hit you like a tone of bricks

    More than once.
I stalled a 8-71 on a hill and it kicked all the oil out of the oil bath air cleaner.

Seen a VAO Case run backwards several times, always during shutdown. It'd almost shut off, then sputter a couple times before it would stop. Once in a while it'd kick over backwards and run a couple revolutions the wrong way.

D.Tibbitt, Feedman and Oxbow Thank this.
