now you can get some weird wear if your anchor pins are worn--as it will allow your shoes to kind of #### in the drum and not beequi distant accross the drum--sometimes the shoe will come out of the drum say an 1/8 or so--not good
and yes checks just happen--cracks are what you have to watch for---if you have your brakes off--just give the drum a tap with a small hammer---if no cracks--the drum will ring like a bell
the s-cam bushing cn be checked if you back off your brakes--and use a small pry bar to try and move the slack adjuster up and down---and watch for play at the s-cam
another place to watch for wear is the pin at the slack adjuster and brake clevis--and a shot of lubricant is also good for the pin so it doesnt sieze up -
whoops duplicated it

Some really good info here HD--and a good lesson that now as an O/O you need to check everything all the time--BUT--IMHO--if you only have one truck--and do not have heavy tools--you really aren't going to see any savings(at least for a looong while)equiping yourself with what you need to do a lot of the heavy repairs--while doing brakes--is not a difficult job--or hard to learn--it does require some pretty expensive stuff-not a sears plug in compresor and air ratchet--so IMHO--if you can find a shop in your area that can be trusted--and start to build a relationship with them--you can usually get this work done reasonably--because I am just guessing--but just using brakes as an example--you would probably be 3 trucks down the road--before the tolls and jack you need would begin to pay for themselves--Just my humble $.02
Good Luck to ya!hd99_fatboy Thanks this. -
i"ve found several 20 ton hydraulic bottle jacks for under a hundred bucks, some air actuated some not.
and while I could probably break the nuts with a 3/4 drive breaker bar with a helper bar on it, it would be a long day for sure.
I have a lot of tools, but just getting started on acquiring 3/4 drive gear, wicked expensive.
need a bigger compressor anyway, so I may drop some coin for one soon...
we'll see how that goes.
any idea how much one of them big assed air guns go for?
and thanks for the input, all info is well appreciated. -
hd99 fatboy, did you get the link to work? I am using Firefox and it worked for me.
-
yeah, I'm using the latest Firefox as well
and I did get the file, but I had to disable all my add ons and plugins to get it to come in.
weird.
haven't had a chance to look at it yet, been on the road the last few daze.
having my driveway redone today and tomorrow too, if these guys ever get here, did only one load today, cause they said they'd be here around 12 noon.
1pm and no show yet, and I'm gettin aggravated...
