What a jigsaw life; spent most of my life around Nashville and moved to Las Vegas. No personal income taxes in Nevada either and property taxes are low in Las Vegas/Henderson; so are home prices.

AZ wouldn't give me a CDL, so I "moved" to CA and got it there instead. When AZ funnily allowed me to get one, I "moved back".

    1.57%?

    Pssht. That's not high.

Here in El Paso, my home was assessed at $117K, yet I pay over $3200/yr. 2.75%, and the City Council just voted to raise it yet again.

That's nuts on your tax rate! What of all the talk about Texas having a low cost of living?

El Paso County has the 25th highest property tax rate in the nation. Its spent on educating thousands of Mexican kids that cross the border for school every morning (they know these kids are enrolled illegally using relatives' addresses and such but do nothing) and on a baseball stadium that nobody wanted yet was approved through a back-door deal that never came to a public vote.

Just a bunch of crooked politicians here spending money like a drunk sailor on a port call in Thailand.

For what it's worth, getting a CDL in NY is relatively painless. I don't know about transferring from another state into NY though. I moved from VA to NY in 1998 and silly NY forgot to transfer my motorcycle endorsement and misspelled my name, so I'd hate to come here with a CDL and have them bugger it up. Not many people have that problem though :)

And, on the property taxes, I've got most of you beat. Bought my house upstate for $75k, paid $3800/yr property taxes. My dad's house on Long Island, appraised at $430k (location, location), was only assessed $3400/year taxes.

You pay high property taxes because "Anchorage!". That place will drive you nuts.

My last property tax bill for my 10 acres on the Kenai was $680. Yes, it has a house, a shop and a storage shed.

I took my road test in TX with an automatic. I have heard, but not verified it is one of the few states which allow you to test in an automatic.

There is an automatic restriction in TX but they did not apply it to my license(or anyone else in the truck that day, or anyone that I know of either)
