Well, had my fun in Canada. 90KM per hour was fun even for my Big Red SNAIL Racer.Enter at Sault Ste Marie, MI and ended in Cornwall, Ontario. No issues with the load or delivering, although I will say took a little getting used to the small TIGHT streets and roads. Not like the US. Think of any inner city that you hate driving in for extended periods of time. I can say the scenery was nice.
So, then the funs begins.
First, unload on Monday morning and then sit around for hours waiting for direction, dispatch, anything to get me out of Canada. Finally get a load to pick up right across the border, PERFECT! Oh, it picks up on Tuesday. No miles on Monday, except for crossing border.. 4 miles.
Well, get my load on Tuesday for Detroit. For some reason don't get any directions (yes I sent in macro) so I make my own route to I-81 S. Send in again and get directions and fuel routing. OK, for those who have done this more than I, have you ever taken a load through Canada to deliver in US? Any extra paperwork needs for that? My routing was through Canada, but my mileage listed was for going I-90 around to I-75. Hence not knowing laws that well I went around. Deliverd ontime.
So then get routed to Delta, OH for pickup. Pickup a coil, head to Pilot to weigh. BAd story here... I weighed in fine and a curtain driver came in behind me. He got inside before me and was getting his weight ticket. I jokingly say, "driver your over weight by 3k lbs." He gets ticket and is 2500 over weight on his trailer tandems.. ouch... I was joking, but now I feel like an ###. He had to go back to have them move his load.
So, take my load through Gary, get permits, and off in morning to Evansville, WI. Drop load and send messages... nothing. In a dead zone and nothing I'm sending is getting out. So call FM and get next load, pick up right where I am at. COOL
Go inside shipping office, loads not ready and won't be until this afternoon. Cool, I'll wait. A coupe of hours go by and another Roehl flat bedder pulls in. I go to chat with him and just as I get there he tells me his load was just canceled. He was picking up there as well. As we chat, get a call from my FM, can't send and receive message remember, load canceled find truck stop and hold tight.
Well, it's what time and I am now getting, check back tomorrow.
That's two days this week NOTHING. OOHHHH, the winter slow down sucks! When's Thanksgiving again?

Canada is cake (I love it most times) and you did it with a skateboard...try a 53 foot van in Toronto at the onset of rush hour (lord have mercy on me)...
I have taken a load from Niagra Falls NY through Canada..and yes there is xtra paperwork...The DRG has the answers you need though for the paperwork...and the paperwork you need should be in your permit book...
At least with a flatbed you don't risk having to get unloaded at a boarder checkpoint for the customs guys looking for things (hasn't happened to me yet)... but your lucky...(until you get a certaineed load that is).. -
I was gonna say read you DRG, what is it chapter 13?

it depends on where the tadems are slid...sometimes when they are at "d" that trailer wants to take its sweet ### time to follow you otherwise when its on 'A' it will track pretty good..but then you got to worry about the tailend swinging around and smacking something...it also depends on whats on and where the weight is too..you flat bedders know that better than most...at least you can see your load when you grab your trailer...but I don't envy you..you guys end up with the nice tall and wide loads from time to time...your trailers are more like the post office commercial...if it fits it ships...

If you run van and want to switch over to flatbed, do you have to go out with a trainer for a while after securement training?
-
Probably a local trainer at a terminal for a few days, I had all van trainers and after securement I went to appleton for 4 days.

I wouldn't make the change to flats this time of year, it is slow, and it will get worse before it gets better. My average is holding at about 2500 per week, so as long as that holds I will stick it out in vans til flats pick up (alot...) Wait til spring to make the change, see if things pick up, and then get used to doing everything in good weather, that way you are not learning to tarp in freezing weather...
-
wait until spring, switching now things will seem alright, not great up decent. Then late dec, jan, feb, things suck.....a lot.
