So I start work for Sysco on Monday. Living in the Metro Detroit, MI area.
I plan to stay for a good year at least, I have other ventures I’m investing in (property etc) that I’m going to use the money I make to get squared away and hopefully buy a truck to go O/O.
My question is what would be the best sort of fright to deal with being in the Michigan/Great Lakes area being an O/O. Something I could potentially make good or equivalent money to Sysco for example with less work. I have a line from my Mother In Laws friend who works out in Texas and needs help with oil/tanker work but idk. That’s a lot of time away from home (wife’s pregnant plus two small kids already). Is there something more reasonable in this area that makes sense?

My cousin now passed away, used to run up there. That's all I know besides he had a 3 axle trailer.

Almost anything will be less work than Sysco. Other Similar Companies are US Foods in Wixom. Gordon’s in Brighton, Rheinhardt in Hazel Park. Rheinhart pays pretty good. So does Gordon’s. Wolverine Packing in Detroit also. As far as O/O freight. Lot of Automotive stuff that gets you back home regularly. Just Lease onto the right one. Contracts change often. Check around when it’s time, see who’s hauling loads into the plants. There’s always local gravel/road work year round now. You’ll need a heavy spec Truck. Work a lot in the summer. Again, just see who’s running loads. A quad axle Dump is an option. I would rather work for an Automotive Carrier, Locally by the hour. May be a little less pay, but will put you right into the mix. The Grocery thing is a PITA. Local LTL is good. I’d look for a Company that pays OT after 40 with available OT. 60 hrs pays 70. $20 hr. Pays $1400 week. Instead of a heavy lifting Grocery job paying $25hr. 50 hrs. at $1375. The money’s not worth the work.

I saw a couple openings for O’Reillys at 30-40 an hour depending on an experience and they want a year to two.
I couldn’t find Rheinhart on a Google search out of Hazel Park. Appreciate the info on the gravel truck I was just thinking about those earlier and the note as far as automotive parts.Rideandrepair Thanks this.
