I'm already in school and paying my way. 50 year old cop/investigator, prior combat infantry vet looking for a change. I've been looking at this field of work for almost a year. I could do many other things as PI, back ground investigation, outside the US corp security etc., but I want to step away from LE field all completely.
I know I can work hard, without griping. I know I can pass any and all clearances for this job or any other testing for endorsements. In 35 years of driving I've driven all kinds of military trucks, combat vehicles, farm equipment, fire apparatus and brush trucks, basically everything except a class A combination yet. And I like to drive, even x-country and outside the US. I can count all accidents in my life in one hand. One in Germany for rear ending another vehicle while checking out a chicks ###. I was 19 y/o. Another time I was ran off the road on a snowy pass by a 18 wheeler and crashed into an unoccupied illegally parked car too close to the road. Other 2 accidents were intentionally done on the job. Let's just say there are many ways to stop a murderer evading the cops that are not on the books. The other was a head on and by his choice.
I'd like to hear the recommendations. If you have a negative reply, please articulate. If is to bad mouth trucking or newbies don't bother to reply. If you want to bash cops, go to a cop forum. I'll no longer be one and could probably outdo your cop bad mouthing if there were a competition, The only reason I mention it is to provide perspective. I'm positive there are other former cops that could give me some insight.
I appreciate this in advance.

Welcome I'm retired from the SC Highway Patrol. Good people here. Im on my phone right now or I would type more. Just stay away from Averitt. Also @Chinatown can hook you up with a with a better starting job than any school will.

About the accidents, at the worst a company will look back 10 years. Most only look back 5. They shouldn't be a problem.
Did you get the girl in Germany though? Was she worth the wreck? That's the real question.blairandgretchen, Mudguppy, Straight Stacks and 1 other person Thank this. -
With your ability to obtain clearances, I would look into specialized cargo. Some that haul to DOD facilities pay great, but I think most are team operations and have min experience requirements. Any idea what you want to pull? Flats, tanker or a box? How often do you want to be home? Do you want otr or home daily? Answering these questions for yourself will narrow down your choices a bit.

Which state do you live in?
Do you want coast to coast running?
Will you have endorsements? At least get the hazmat endorsement and it wouldn't hurt to get a TWIC ID Card. -
TROOPER to TRUCKER and Straight Stacks Thank this.

As a former LEO I would think that it is you that could give some of us some useful advice.

As others have said here, some more information could be useful: your location, what type of work you're interested in, OTR or local, etc.
BTW, I have two brothers retired from our local sheriff's department (regular patrol, K9, S.W.A.T., sniper team, undercover), and a cousin still active with the same department. Lots of respect your way...
