I would add more, but I think everyone has just about covered the basics. I will say this, how wise can this owner be? I mean, don't get me wrong. People make mistakes, but with OP's track record, not to mention lack of experience, I don't see how you could, as a o/o, put someone behind the wheel and take such a big gamble. No offense OP, but if the stuff you mentioned AREN'T on your dac or mvr, I'm sure there are flatbed companies that will take you on, and actually TRAIN you, which will set you up for a better chance at success. Toying with this idea is a recipe for disaster considering the problems you've already had. Your "boss" is taking unreasonable liberties with your posterior, if you know what I mean. A 1099 better pay 25 to 30 percent more than a W2 job. The tax situation as others have explained require that imho.

Always secure more than the DOT requires. Know the WLL of all your devices , AND the securement points on your trailer. Actually do your loadchecks , ESPECIALLY the first one inside of 50 miles. If anything is gonna work loose, it'll happen by then. Crawl on your load when tarping . You can be very high off the ground sometimes. Go slow , be safe. The FMCSA green book has all of the gov BS related to flatbedding. Get to Know it. Sections 393.100-393.201, or pages 478-502. Helps with WLL, the "50 percent rule", and securing various types of freight you'll haul .
