    Hello Drivers,

I'm about to launch into the truck driving field and my brain hurts from trying to figure the best avenue to start from. I'm coming from being a 25 year corporate executive and the research in this field is exhausting. What I feel it boils down to is; get your cdl and then drive 6 - 12 months for a company before you have suitable choices.

Being in the Detroit metro area would anyone from the same area have advice on which is the best CDL School to attend and then what company would be a safe bet to spend the first 6 - 12 months at?

Many thanks for any helpful directions based on your experience.

Well definitely get your CDL on your own. Good call there. Don't think all the carriers that take new drivers are bad either. Take everything in the trucking world with a grain of salt. I driver for Roehl, and would recommend them to a new driver. They have treated me well and I have no real complaints. I have heard decent things about NTB too. I'd just keep pouring through threads and find who you think will work. Sorry, I'm not from Detroit though. My brother lives up there and O/Os for AmCan, but is thinking about coming to Roehl as an O/O.

I spoke to a Roehl recruiter two weeks ago who told me that Roehl will NOT hire beginning drivers who went to driving school in Michigan. Michigan residents are okay, but not newbies who attended driving school in the state.

It sounds absurd. And I don't understand it. But that's what I was told.

FVTC Appleton, WI. Satisfy residency requirements, 10 weeks, 800 BTW miles minimum, under $2k + $1k room & board if you stay at the dorm in Oshkosh. :biggrin_25525:

Ya know, I have to say Roehl does have some strange hiring policies.

Thanks for the input. Still would like to hear from someone who started in the Detroit area and what's served them the best.

I don't know anything about the trucking schools in Michigan, and I don't know if you're willing to leave the state to train, but I went with Watkins & Shepard in Missoula, MT. Went to Missoula for 30 day training and they assigned me a truck. I think the training was phenomenal and I'm happy with the job so far, been driving since November. There's a terminal in Taylor.
