At one point in history factory worker's weren't treated like human being's. Thing's happened and all the sudden ( ok not suddenly) they were treated much much better.

As has been said by many a person, " to get respect, you have to earn it". Their are to many out their that don't care, those that are actually "doing" the thing's all truck drivers are getting blamed for and those that don't care enough to say anything to those people.

If I was to say " I'd like to clean up the area around the T/A in Big Spring, Tx... are their any drivers in the area that could give up an hour of down time to help"... how many would help? How many would simply say " that isn't my job" or "Why am I cleaning up after someone else".

BTW pick up a copy of the AMA and see how many "professional" doctor's are loosing their licence due to unprofessional behavior... the difference... Someone care's enough to police themselves.

Pattyj you know I'm retired , but haven't been for that long. Trucking has ALWAYS HAD IT'S GOOD , BAD , AND UGLY , even back in the 60's , there were places that weren't on anyone's' A-list for employment. But , the difference then was the PEOPLE....good people won't stand for bad treatment. They leave...go find another place. You're correct a professional gets paid more , because he's worth more.... , his skill level , and his ability to do the job , in all types of weather, at anytime of day , without being told to , all are traits of a professional. Sadly those traits are severely lacking in today's work force...not only in trucking. People ( drivers) by their own actions have driven the respectability of drivers into the toilet...not companies...drivers...you've got to have self respect way before you can expect anyone else to respect you...not calling you out persoanlly patyj...but you see it everyday...drivers have done this to them selves.....you saw some of this type behaviour 30 years ago , you sure did , but nowhere near as often...nowhere near....for all those who whine about how "terrible " trucking has become....to them I say...Look in the mirror there cupcake.....you'll see why....

Sure. I felt it was impossible for me to operate safely under the 14 hour rule. The End.

newbietrucker007, what kind of response are you expecting?? I mean, I get you believe it will be a difficult conversation with you folks. But if you had to guess, what exactly do you think their response will be?

I blame a lot of whats happening on the economy.True, there are a lot of bad drivers but the good drivers outweighs that bad but we all have to pay for price for what many have done to our industry and its not fair at all.I have a lot of self respect but still think this industry nothing more then labor..Companies only get what they pay for, they pay poorly they're going to get those kind of drivers and can't blame the drivers.Look what trainees get, thats embarrassing. They work hard.Companies take full advantage of trk drivers. Some get ripped off, dont get reimbursed get unjustly accused, the list is endless.Where is the professionalism. No wonder so many drivers have a no care attitude,Companies and FMCSA did it to them.Even though I consider this a job I still show my respect to the motorists and respect the laws but I hate what this industry has become with a passion.

OK gpsman..here is my rebuttal...If employers wanted to sponsor 3rd world immigrants , why aren't they doing it as we speak....with all of the illegal's from Mexico and other places south of the border over-running our borders..they have all the folks they need to draw from.....OH wait...those guys don't have the training , or the SKILLS .... I know in the state I live in NC....the roofing and the construction business is all to hell because of them...Now those are considered skilled trades....

I understand your point and I agree with some of it...but there are many , many great paying , wonderful jobs still in trucking....I had one for a long , long time , and was extremely happy , well paid and was able to retire early. I guess I'm sort of jaded in my opinion , lots of folks weren't/aren't as fortunate as I was in finding that kind of job in trucking.

    mje and gpsman Thank this.
