Greetings all...... I am ELATED that I found this forum on a google search. What a great forum for truckers to share opinions and advice!
I have read countless reviews on this site. I begin to get excited about one company then I come across another thread that has me second guessing...... so I decided to start my own thread and get some GREAT opinions.
Well here is my situation. I am 32 w/2 kids. I am getting into trucking because it was something I always wanted to do but do to the jobs I had it was not feasible for me to quit and go on the road. Now that I have been unemployed for 6 mos. and the job I thought I had a possibility of having didn't fall thru I feel now is the time to make my move into the trucking industry.
I do not have a CDL and will need training to get it. I have been looking at companies like C.R. England, Central Refrigerated Service, Swift and Knight Transportation to get the credentials and training to be on the road professionally. I understand the contract they make you sign and I have NO PROBLEM with that. How I look at it is instead of paying for training I can have training AND gain 6mos. to 1yr driving experience. I notice there are standalone schools who can give you training and their catch phrase is "you school with us, you have the choice to which company you can work for!)
Like in my professional life (retail) I do not like to be a "job Hopper" I prefer to gain my experience and stay with the company that would train me.
My question is what is the best route to go in your opinion based on my situation?
Which would be a BETTER company to start out with?
What are my options AFTER 6mos. to 1yr. of employment?
Is driving as a noob a good way to support my family?
What should I look out for on the road?
When driving with a trainer what should be acceptable and what is not? (Im not talking about anything sexual!)
Should I go standalone school and look for employment on my own or should I get with a major carrier, have them train me and employ me and stay with them until I get experience?
Thanks for the feedback and I look forward to posting my journey as I progress thru learning to be a professional driver!

Check with Con-way Truckload. They have a good school program too.

either way can be good, company sponserd training is little to no money out of pocket while training.will hear good and bad on just about every school out there,I had freinds go to CRengland and had a bad experince but that could have just been their out look on things.private school does give you the choice to pick where you go but not a guarantee of a job, company trianing if you the test you have a job. good luck

Your unemployeed right now then the state may pay for your schooling so you don't have to sign a contract. Check that out TODAY! Avoid signing a training contract at all costs, you think you know what it will be like but in all honesty you have no clue! Sorry to be so blunt but thats it. Ever had to leave the wife and kids for 6-8 weeks and live in a small box with a stranger? (that snores and farts) Add in the fact you won't be makeing much money and most will go to cover the household bills that gives you enough for 3 pb&j's a day. OK it might not be that bad but it could.
Best thing is keep your options open and that means NO CONTRACT!
I've never worked for CRE but talked to some that have and I would NEVER even consider them!
One last thing did I mention NO TRAINING CONTRACT? -
some folks wont the choice of no contracts,so the point here is give some positive thoughts for the newbie's or wannabe's. I agree to keep options open, being a truck driver is not the easiest job to do being away from does suck yes,but if you love what you do " like I do" then you make it work.it's only as bad as you allow it to be.And again you find folks to have bad things to say about everyone. Good Luck

Do not forget company's have reimbrstiment pay for schooling I would stay away from night from personal experience they do not always want to pay you every week it is a hassle some people do say they don't have problems with it.

For company sponsored training, I like Central Refrigerated.
You may get private schooling through the unemployment office, which is the best option. For the best paying job, start preparing now. Get a passport, TWIC, and endorsements, especially tanker/hazmat. If you do this preparation, you can be in the $60K - $70K annual payrange within 12- 24 months. Some guys get these jobs right after graduation as a first job, because they are prepared and aren't shy about doing many applications. -
"Is driving as a noob a good way to support my family?"
NO!
!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I say it right?
NO!
You'll barely be able to support yourself on the road at first, much less a family.
And figure that for the first 2 years or so.
Can you support your family on $200-700 per week (before your own expenses and taxes and med insurance (figure at least $100 per week for your expenses))?
And it does vary each week - it is never the same from week to week.
This time of year you might have a couple months where you only make a thousand or so.
Also, are you good with the fact that, for at least a couple years, you won't see your family for more than 2-3 days each month?
Are they good with that as well?
Perhaps you should move out of your house for a few weeks - stay in a motel or with a friend - to get the feel of things.
No contact with your family except for phone calls. Then go back for 3 days. And do it again.
Then multiply that by a couple years.GoneButNotForgotten and RickG Thank this. -
Knowing where home is will help us, hiring areas. But signing a contract is not advised. If its not for you or not working out , you are stuck. And they know this! They can ruin your life. Check for government programs and community colleges can be a huge bargain ! Best of luck!
Chinatown Thanks this. -
Thank you all for the advice!
