So, long story short, I graduated from a driving school in '06, then drove a flatbed for 3 months before quitting due to family drama. Since then I've done various local driving jobs, though currently I'm not even driving, just doing temp work. Seeing as how I don't really have anyone to cause drama anymore it seems like this is a perfect time to get back to OTR driving. Plus, I liked it, and if dumb 26 year old me could do it then less-dumb 36 year old me should be great.

So, on a lark I applied online to Swift and Prime, just to see what would happen. I talked to the Swift recruiter a few times, had a phone interview about my criminal record (a handful of misdemeanors from over a decade ago) and then they denied me. Prime never got back to me at all.

Now I'm not sure what to do. Like I said, my criminal history isn't great it was the same when I got my first OTR job out of school so I can't see that being the problem. Plus, I got a copy of the report Swift requested so I know my MVR is clean. I just got a new DOT physical, and my work history is steady. I had kind of assumed any company that would hired trainees and get them CDL's would easily take someone with a Class A whose been out of the game for a while, but it's looking like that was incorrect.

So I guess I'm just looking for advice on what to try next. I want something OTR, preferably all 48 with a lot of running. I don't have much use for hometime right now anyway, might as well get some miles and cash under me while I can. I've done flatbed and liked it well enough but van would be fine too.

Carolina Cargo might work with you. Do their online application then follow with a phone call in a couple of days; gives them time to look it over.
If that doesn't work, try the WIOA Program in Iowa and they will pay for cdl school.

Try CRST and Carolina Logistics. (Carolina Logistics and Carolina Cargo are two seperate companies)
TMC has their own cdl school in Des Moines.

Thanks for the leads, I'll be sure to try them.

Though, since I have a Class A CDL I wouldn't think I'd need any schooling.

Depends on the company; some companies will probably just give you a refresher course and fast track you through orientation.
Try Freymiller and Transport America also.

Have you tried going back to the company you were with back in 06?

Actually, hadn't thought of that. I didn't leave on bad terms (as far as I know) so it's worth a shot.

Wow, thanks Chinatown. After work tomorrow I'll sit down and start banging out applications. Eventually someone will say yes. (I hope).

Figure as long as I get on somewhere and put in a year, then I'll have some options.

You'll be on the road soon.
@Stone Dude - If you get several job offers, pick one with the fancy trucks with APU, refrigerator, Direct TV, XM radio. The APU is really nice since you can shut off the truck engine and crank up the APU and have power for heat/ac, tv, computer, etc. Lots of "no-idle" rules with trucking companies and municipalities since you last drove OTR.
