I live in Middle GA and after giving up on construction markets improving i finally got the go ahead from the the wife to start a career in trucking. I am broke, credit is shot and can only scrounge up about $700 to get me thru the training process and to my first check. P.A.M. has approved me but i'm not sure if they are my best option plus i prefer to train and work for a company closer to my home. I would greatly appreciate some sound advice on what you think my best options are considering my situation.

Look into the WIA from Georgia DOL. Good option, I am looking into it myself. It pays for your school and lodging and I think a meal allowance. I would go to school in Jacksonville but you would probably go somewhere in Atlanta. I think you gotta pay for your permit and DOT physical up front somewhere around $200 I live in south Georgia and I'm either gonna do this or try to go to a company that does their own training. Read on here about training companies in the good and bad company threads. There are a couple that I think are probably really good. Millis appears to be a good one up in Cartersville and Central Refrigerated looks good also. They have a terminal in Conley, Ga. From what I've read here they aren't your typical bottom feeder, mega fleet outfits and you'll probably be making money within 3-4 weeks. I feel your pain about the construction industry. I am an unemployed land surveyor. I can't even get a fast food job. Really, I have tried. Good luck with whatever you choose. Who knows our paths could cross someday.

Millis will cost you money up front. Roehl has company sponsored training and they hire out of Macon. Stevens also has training but I would go with Roehl first.

Oh yeah, I think I remember Millis saying you needed 500 up front?
