HI everyone,
I'm currently in school to get my CDL (going to an accredited trucking school. I didn't want to be committed to any one company for my CDL).
My school is pretty descent with a placement department and they have recruiters in ALL the time hyping up their company.
My question is this...
What is a descent company that I should look into as a new driver?
I know the pay is not going to be top dollar for the first few years and I am noot looking for top pay right out of the gate (and I know usually the higher cents per mile are for areas where you dont do alot of miles (NYC, Boston, Philly, DC, etc...). What I'm looking for in a company is...
1) MILES. I want OTR and dont plan on home time too much (no family, no friends, divorced) I just want to be on the road for many years.
2) Decent training pay (I still have bills that will need to be paid while I'm waiting to get my own truck and start making miles).
3) Decent benefits (medical, dental, etc), Tuition reimbursement, pratical miles, layover pay, shag pay etc...
4) I want to make sure I keep getting loads. I know I'll have to prove myself to my dispatcher, be ontime, be professional and don't say no. But I want to just keep moving.
Any ideas and suggestions as far as who to look at would be appreciated.
Thanks
Advice on where to go

Need to know where you live-city & state; are you in the hiring area for some good companies.?
You don't have to settle for low pay right out of the gate. Do you have endorsements, passport, TWIC? You want miles & OTR, so reefer, flatbed, tanker/hazmat. Tribe Transport runs 48 states, Canada, Mexico. System Transport runs 48 states, Canada, Alaska. Don't look at just the traditional starter companies, look everywhere. Many companies will hire you even if they say experience required, if you went to a good school. Melton Truck Lines runs 48 states and is definitely not a starter company. Same with National Carriers.Trucker Todd Thanks this. -
I'm in Massachusetts, but have family connections in Carlisle, Pa., Ft. Worth, Tx., Sacramento, Ca., Ohio, etc... so I can easily have any hiring area.
I go to NETTTS, 600 hour course half of which is class room, half is hands on doing maneuvers, basic skills and actual miles on the road.
I have a passport, Doubles and tanker endorsement (waiting for hazmat until after I get the license).Chinatown Thanks this. -
You sure did everything right! When doing applications, be sure you note you will relocate to the hiring area. Can make good money running teams, but most hate that, including me. The best money is in tanker/hazmat; if you can land one of those jobs can make $60K+ your first year. Food grade tanker is pretty good, but hazmat is much better. I'll give you a list of a few tanker companies & some others on here can recommend some good reefer or flatbed 48 state carriers. I don't recommend dry van because historically, the annual pay is the lowest.

Ft. Worth is good; in most hiring areas and a bonus is Texas has no personal income tax.
