Hi, I am OTR for a big carrier. My leader frequently complains about the amount of hours I use in a day. He says that I should run down my clock to near zero every day. Somedays I only get 7 hours of drive time and others I get 10. On average it is 8.5 hours drive time and on duty. I usually burn 12 hours of 14 every day. I average 80% on-time pick up/delivery.

So, is my leader right for complaining? Or should I disreguard his words?

Leader..? You make him sound like a God lol.

He can't really tell ya how to use your 70.
On the flip side, though, 80% on time is pretty unreliable. Maybe you can figure out how to plan your trips accordingly and he'd keep quiet..

I would work on getting that on-time % built up to 100% again then he really wouldn't have a reason to get on you

You are averaging 8.5 hours driving AND on duty?

Some drivers attempt to keep their daily logged hours (lines 3/4) at 8.75 so that they don't ever run out of HOS. That way you never have to take a 34hr reset on the road. Sometimes you hit 8, sometimes 10 but you try to maintain the 8.75 average. If done properly (and outside of CA and OR) you can still get a 3000 mile week.

*to clarify* This was to show the student (silver) why some want to work shorter daily hours. Nothing wrong with taking a 34, I'd just rather do it at my home terminal and have time with wifey... She's a heck of a lot cuter than my truck....

well is it bad to have to take the 34 hour reset ? as long as you get your load there before the reset kicks in

Good god what the heck is a leader?,dispatcher you mean?. But 80% on time delivery is that because of breakdowns or what?. If not that percentage isn't good. No wonder why he's raising cane with you. What do you do with all that sitting around?. What's wrong with a reset?. I bet if you got your on time delivery percentage up. It would probably be more profitable for you.

With an ontime percentage like that you may find yourself unemployed soon...

    No excuse for that....:biggrin_25511:

when i first started out, which wasnt a terribly long time ago. i learned to always go as far as you can with the available hours. always arrive at least an hour early. always get near your destination and wait. but start showing up on time every time without hitting anything along the way, and you will never have to hear any constructive criticism.
