The front axle maybe 14,600.... Not sure. GVWR for the truck is 55,200. It has 40k rear air bags. So front 15,200 ??
So if the rear axle needs pushed back at least 47" (almost 4 feet) then ?? Correct ?? 143" - 96" = 47"
I'll know more next week when we go pickup the Peterbilt from the dealership and bring it back. -
If i was a betting man I’d bet you some pretty good money the front axle in the truck you’ve been using was way under rated, cause them tires for sure were/
road tractors rarely have more than a 13,200 pound axle for the most part, and it would be pretty unlikely to even be that heavy in that particular model of truck, if it was not built for a vocational use.
Ain’t got to spec out a brand new truck specifically for what you’re doing; but outside of that, you’re always going to be modifying something to get closer to what you actually need when you’re buying used. Purpose built units aren’t generally sold, they are used until it’s the end of their useful life and replaced with the same or an updated version of tbe same thing.SilverBulletBand Thanks this. -
I'll look at the door tag and see what the front axle is rated at. -
We also have a 2015 Dodge Ram 5500 flatbed we use. It has a 14' flatbed with a TommyLift hanging on the backend.
When I started work at this place, I noticed the front steers on the Dodge had very have wear on the INSIDE tread on them. I could tell right then and there this truck had been used overloaded a LOT ! Turned out we had to have the front ball joints replaced. Truck has 185k miles on it.
I did some figuring around with the GVWR including the bed and TommyLift. My figuring that truck only has a Payload Rating of 9000#s. The knucklehead coworkers were running it was 6 Full Pallets of Fertilizer each weighing 1 Ton (2,000#s). 12,000 #s total. Oh, that's ONLY 3,000 # OVER WEIGHT for Dodge 5500 !!
Got a story better than that I'll post later! -
I've never once drove a cab & chassis 4500/5500 from GM, Ford or Ram that didn't wear tires weird or wander. Didn't matter the weight or age.
SilverBulletBand and Ruthless Thank this. -
New straight truck front axle rating is 14,200.
Yes, frame shop says rear tandems need moved back at least 4-5 FEET.
