I have a belly dump trailer that I'm not using now and thinking of renting it out but I've heard of the horror stories of renters not caring for the trailers, not bringing the trailer back, or bringing them back with worn tires/brakes or misc damage. One guy even said he rented one out a long time ago and would never do it again because his trailer was driven down into Mexico and never found. I wonder if a renter decides not to pay and realizes since he's gonna lose the deposit anyway what to prevent him from just keeping it? Having to repo a trailer in the middle of the night that is connected to the tractor seems like it would be a nightmare!
Besides the obvious things like getting a contract in writing, having the renter carry full insurance with me listed as loss payee/additional insured and getting a deposit, I would like to hear what others have done to safeguard the equipment.
Thanks
Advice sought for renting my trailer

Don't do it. Sell or park it. Unless you can take the risk of not getting paid or the trailer never returning then just say NO!!!!!
been there. Done that!!Cetane+ Thanks this. -
Go out and beat it with a sledgehammer for an hour, that's the condition it will come back in.

Once you ALLOW then to take your property it is no longer criminal, just civil. So it is up to you to get your property back. The insurance WILL NOT cover abuse. The only intelligent options are keep, sell.

I had one that I was being a nice guy, was taking payments on it. He abandoned it in Oklahoma City. No good deed goes unpunished.
Jokingypsy Thanks this.
