Scopes, antenna analyzers, etc etc etc, it always seems like the final test is 'some guy at exit 123 was able to hear me', or some guy halfway across the country was able to hear me'. Not very scientific

As a side note, if I was a tech and you just paid me big bucks to set up my rig, I'll tell you your rig sounds like a million dollars

Yep. I guess that is my point. Finding a person you know and trust to give you an honest report is often the tricky part for some guys

Yep, it's like gas mileage. Let one guy get 35mpg in his Crown Vic on a trip with a 50mph tailwind, and he's got bragging rights forever more.

    rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

The test always comes down to public opinion.

    Science is ALL ABOUT consensus.

    Then it is SETTLED!!

    Example:

Which of the below is the better radio?

OF COURSE it’s the one with the chrome!! The lights”. The music!!

I should start a service. you want to hear what you sound like, drive past my QTH (actually a few miles away) I will make an mp3 recording off of one of my radios - you select - and I will send it to you for $20

    rabbiporkchop and Slowmover1 Thank this.

Rent some space at Effingham (or another giant truck junction) and it’s a money-maker.

$12 (less than dinner at Denny’s!)

$2 for repeat customers (solve those tuning problems!)

I will need you to include in your report the type of equipment used to create the mp3, was it recorded with a mic or line in, etc etc. ;-)

Of course, it goes through my mixing board from the radio without filtering. None of this holding a mic up to a speaker crap, or shaky video where you get sea sick and can't understand anything that is said.

    Slowmover1 and Timin770 Thank this.

And you have recent NIST certificates for it all! As The Guru of Bench Tech advises. (Pay attention, now).
