I have not come across this, yet. But is there an age limit that one can start out getting a class A?
I already have a class B and have been driving with it for almost 3 years. Would like to "up grade" to an A and do OTR.
IF I'm not too old (hey, I don't feel old, but I can't get away with hiding my birth year on my license), trying to figure out what's the best way of doing this. There is a school not far from where I live, I could go there, but they are not a trucking company that will hire me and give me on the road experience. I already have the book from MV and intend to get my permit before I go to any school. I would like to get on with a company that will take me on and give me training one on one, on the road. (I still have a TON of reading in here to sort that out
)
Also, trying to figure out "pre-hire".
And, is there a glossary of abbreviations somewhere? I think I finally figured out "APU", Alternate Power Unit. Right?
I think I may have been at this long enough today, feel like I'm getting "brain overload"!![]()

Hi Hearthooves! I'm in my 50s and in NJ too; just graduated and got my CDL A. I went exactly the same route you are doing. Got the manual and studied/tested on my own, then signed up at a CDL school to get my practical experience. I have a sort of unique situation - I won't be going OTR, so the local school fit my needs nicely.
There are two really good schools in NJ - one is Smith & Solomon, and the other is Jersey Tractor Trailer - those two are recommended by the military. I know that S&S has some very good connections with OTR companies. Schneider, one of the better OTR beginner companies "approves" S&S.
The schools have job placement coordinators that will help you after you graduate ... and recruiters from companies like Schneider, Werner, Covenant, etc. come to give presentations to students and will give out applications.
Even when you graduate from a CDL school, when you join a company of any kind, you will still get training from them from one extent to another.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. -
I'm not afraid of being "too young"! Long past that notion.
