When I came out of school with a fancy CDL back in March I had my eyes set on flatbed, being 21 years old I figured it was best to get the hard work out of the way while I'm still young! But the problems I ran into were not what I expected. I figured being a green driver would limit my flatbed choices, but there were companies left and right hiring guys right out of school for flatbed jobs, the problem I had was AGE. Out of all the southeastern companies CT Transportation was where I eventually made my home since everyone else denied me for being under the age of 23. Now what I'm wondering is if I were to go to some of these other companies after a year of only driving flatbed would that experience bypass the age limit? Or should I just wait it out till the 2 year mark? Now don't get me wrong I have nothing against CT except for underpowered Macks, but it's just not where I feel myself being forever.
Age vs. Experience

The age has to do with insurance. That's the only reason. So keep your nose clean until you get the age they require, and you might get a few pennies added because of your experience.

There are other flatbed companies that hire drivers under 23. The ones that don't will not waive the age limit.

He's only 22 he still has a year to go.

I'd stay with CT until I hit 23 if you have no major gripes with them. A good record for 2 years and you can pretty much go where you want. I would also cross train if they let you haul vans and stuff for the experience. Nothing like filling out an application and where it asks experience putting a few hundred thousand miles in every box. I did this in my current job except put 2 million in the van box and the employer looked at the app and handed me keys to a truck.

Snowman is exactly correct, the more different trailers you pull and learn to use, the more options you have when it comes time to make a switch.
P.S. I may not know much about oktoberfest but that is a mighty fine picture you got there snowman.volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
Don't worry, it's not just you. I *somehow* got into a taxi/limo at 19. Drove for 2 years, got a 6 month suspension (do the math) and couldn't find another limo job until I was 24 even with two years experience. A lot of companies just don't trust people they see as "kids" with the responsibility of handling their equipment.
Right now, I find it funny that the opposite is the case. I've only been with my company about 3 years, and driving trucks for 5-6. And most of the middle management comes to ME for advice on trucks. ("can driver A make it from Chicago to Kentucky in 8 hours? Ask Info." "Where's the ECU fuse on a Cascadia? Ask Info.") Me? Shoot, half the time I'm just trying to figure it out myself. -
I am waiting to see how long it is up before I'm asked to take it down. A woman in a period costume at a public event sitting at a table in public at an event attended by thousands of families.

If I looked like that, I wouldn`t be worried about getting WIA funding for trucking school! <ROFFL>
