i agree with the others replace with new. i run a lot of dusty gravel roads and i replace the filter with new every month. i used to gently tap the loose dirt off the filter half way threw but found i was getting high silicon on my oil samples but just putting new in and leaving it alone till the next showed better oil samples.

Replace with new, with that motor being $20k give or take to rebuild, you can't afford not to replace with new.

    ralin10 Thanks this.

    This makes me wonder:

I had a 3 month contract job building portable chip collectors for the Lockheed-Martin F-35 assembly line. The systems included a filter with a size comparable to the air filter that I had in a Pete 377 that I drove. The filter housing had an air tank in the top (on the clean side of the filter), kept charged with 120PSI of air, with a high volume valve connected to a discharge horn mounted inside the end of the paper filter. When the system was shut down, the PLC would open the high volume valve and dump the air into the filter, which would dislodge most of the dust and debris that had been collected in the paper filter. This would cycle 3-5 times, depending on how it was programmed.

I'm wondering if something like this would be useful on trucks and equipment used in very dusty environments?

There, I just gave away a $million idea for someone to pick up and run with. If anyone wants to sell retrofits, I'll be happy to help design the system. :)

I just use a long-shafted air compressor gun to blow mine out about every other week, then replace with new every 15-20k miles.
