My Caterpillar 3408 has suddenly started blowing heaps of black smoke when I put my foot down, meaning that the air fuel ratio control has stopped working. It may have blown the diaphragm, but it also may just be sticking. I can't remember which way you adjust the screw to give less smoke. The control is the type that is air operated.
I'm a long way from a CAT dealer, otherwise I'd just buy a new air fuel control, but I still have to adjust it.
Help please? As far as I know it's the same control as a 3406.

If I remember right you undo the 7/16 lock nut the turn the screw in for more fuel..
Or you can just regulate the fuel with your right foot till you get back to put a new diaphrame in.
When those get ruptured it usually causes the opposite of what you got going on tho.
Maybe it just sticking.wore out, SAR, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this. -

Well I'd just recomend babying the go Pedel at tip in till boost comes on then just change it out when you get home.
I do know those V8s can sure keep the bug population down tho. Lol -
You probably have this fixed by now . Screw on AFRC is turned in to improve throttle response. The two screws lower on the pump behind the small peanut cover are backed out for more fuel.
Years ago I drove a 3406B with a bad AFRC and if you blew on the go pedal it rolled black smoke. There was no way to accelerate w/o a big cloud behind.
You could pm @wore out for the good advice.Last edited by a moderator: Oct 31, 2017

Well, I fixed it. I bought another air fuel ratio control off this engine. Expensive air fuel control because I bought the engine as well.
