Been thing about building a air lift for rear axle on a closed tandem on springs. Its on a hopper so no weight to speak of. Strickly for when empty. Just wondering of anyone else tried it on springs?

I’m thinking that won’t work so well. You’re only going to get a little lift before you start to fight high spring rates. To lift any further you’ll need big bags lotsa pressure and will most likely bend somthing.
    My 2 cents worth anyway.

It's not going to go well.

I don't have the right frame of mind to explain it all. It's all air or nothing. Spring imposes it's own limitations. However there are situations where spring suspension is beneficial.

But i should pivot on equalizer. And that far would just be axle and tire weight. Ive blocked one up like this when a bearing failed, or wreck even loaded. I have no intention to do this loaded on my trailer. Ive built lift axles and dumps. Just never thought about on springs. I have one place that i back into that this could make it much better. Seeing if any tried it.

    x1Heavy Thanks this.

Im not debating air or spring. I put spring ride on my 2017 wilson hopper. Its 400lbs lighter and dont have air leaks. My light weight is very important.

You're thinking lifting an axle will reduce your light weight? :?

You will need to replace that axle with an air up/down or spring up air down lift axle. Can’t over center leaf springs

Omg no one reads. Im not debating air, or spring, rolling resistance, fuel economy, or weight. Just thinking of building a simple air bag set up to pick up rear axle to the point the spring equalizer tips over center. All weight on front axle. The trailer only weighs 8900lbs. Dont see this as a problem. I have one not so nice place to back into. Raise it. Back in and lower it. Load and pull straight out.
