Got to love those T-storms. You'll encounter many more of those but yeah the 4 wheeler are the biggest problem I've found as well. Also watch sudden lane changes as some of them either won't have their headlights on for some crazy reason or they will be tailgating you since you're guiding the way. I'm sure your mentor covered all that though.

No he hasn't covered that as of yet. Wish I had a mentor with more experience, but will wait and see what happens. He has only been driving for 10 months and I am his 3rd student. I told him his driving scared me... that didn't go over to well. I think he is following to closely and taking the turns at a to high rate of speed for the traffic conditions. Maybe it is just me because I am new and a very cautious driver in general. Thinking about mentioning it when they call me tomorrow. I just don't want to get anyone into trouble. Thanks AZS for the info.

In military aviation, we used to say that there are no old, bold pilots. You are either old, or bold, but seldom do the bold live long.
The way you get good judgement is lots of bad judgement.
And, my favorite, "A man has got to know his limitations." Dirty Harry
When the visibility gets that low, probably best to send a weather delay message and find a safe place to park. Lights off better, rest areas better, or even Wal Mart parking lots if they allow trucks. Leaving trailer lights on can cause others to drive right into your trailer, thinking you are moving. With no surroundings to gauge speed, it can happen.
I am glad you are enjoying your adventures, and getting a lot of unintended lessons, but be on of the old truckers some day, and remember, seldom does any load ever need to get anywhere where if it doesn't get there on time, someone will die. But trying to be a super trucker may have unintended consequences, like your death or the deaths of others.

That's how you should be starting off, I still take turns 5 mph less than what is posted 8 months later. If you're concerned tell drivers services immediately. You only get one chance to be trained.

Lord I wasn't trying to be a super trucker. There were no exits that I saw if there had been I would of used one. The side of the road was layered in 4 wheeler's some off the travel path some not all the way. I drove slowly and very carefully looking for a way out or off the road. When the storm stopped I continued slowly and safely until I found a safe place to get off the road and regain my composure. Was a crazy day, and my 2nd day on the road. All in all it was a good learning experience.

Well so far so good. I am on my 10th day OTR training with my mentor. I got my 50 hrs completed today. I only needed 1.5 would of been done if we hadn't had some many truck problems. Still a little apprehensive of the team part scanned in my logs so on Monday they can clear me to team.
We have had some interesting runs. Did my first milk run. We picked up in Lewisville, Tx and had 3 stops to unload the trailer. First in Mcalester, Ok, 2nd in Ft Smith, Ar and the final in Des Moines, Ia. Got in some good night driving, but ran out of driving hrs on the 2nd day. Tried to park at a Walmart but big signs said no trucks allowed. We found a side street with a unfinished road and backed into that and parked for the afternoon. Hard for me to sleep during the day, but when I finally got parked I had 27 minutes left and the qualcom was letting me know. So we got up at around 11 pm and drove to Iowa from there. Just missed some big storms that were going on through Kansas City south. We caught the outflow winds and it was blowing me around a little on the road. Had to slow down even more. We made it to our stop in Des Moines just in time.
They then sent us out in the middle of now where to some plant to do a pick up near Cedar Falls. I love the navigation makes this so much easier, unfortunatley it doesn't help my trip planning skills. We picked up our load and headed toward Friendship New York. We spent the night at a Flying J in Waterloo,Ia.
We got up this morning and headed out towards Chicago and ran into some fierce thunderstorms. Heavy traffic.... hard rain, thunder and lighting made me so stressed out. On top of that they had a boat load of construction with lanes only 10'6" wide. What a mess... Learned about turnpikes and toll roads today as well. Being from the Southwest haven't had any experience with those either. I found out that they keep trucks to the right 2 lanes, but don't tell you until you are in the 3rd lane :p . Think I may have gotten my picture taken today. :( We continued on and it rained on us for 4 hrs straight. We are parked at the Pilot on I-69 not to far from the 80. We had to get off because we had to refuel. It has finally stopped raining here. Tomorrow we have to cover a easy 400 miles to final but it isn't scheduled for delivery until Monday at 9 am. So I guess we will get close and find another truck stop to hang out in.
All and all it has been pretty good so far. Now comes the fun (hard) part. Learning to trust someone enough to sleep while they are driving. Wish me luck and will post more as it comes.

10 months..........and scarey driving. You won't learn much. The tough part will be learning what you should have been taught in the first place.
