Just got back from an AB roadtrip - quite a few solid leads and face-2-face introductions, good to get on the ground and see what is going on. Got a very mixed reception from walk-ins, from randoms saying they didn't hire BC Class 1 drivers to three guys who took the time out of their day to all sit with me and have a talk through. And everything in between. I think I impressed with my background industry knowledge (thanks to info from friends who work in the patch and from my own research) and realistic expectations of year 1-3 earnings. Also had an idea of my own skillset and where I want to be in 3-5 years time. Definitely helped by people on this forum who keep it real and set people up with factual info.
Got plenty of names and contacts and it all helped me put together a better picture of how this all works. Also lots of wrecks on the highways (4 and 18 wheel) and some fairly rowdy weather conditions to contend with on the way out there.
Had a job offer on day #1 that I declined, as it just didn't quite work out for me. Think my honesty repaid itself......I didn't want to waste a company's time and job-hop, told them so, so I am pencilled in for something more suitable for me that starts in Jan if I want it. With a few call backs that may start over the next couple months, I am hopeful it will all work out. Will to go back there again when needed, and expecting to have to go back for follow up meetings/interviews soon.

Just edited to add....for those sitting back waiting and wondering....get to AB and get with the program. You know what is required, the opportunities are here. You are the only one who can create something for yourself.Last edited: Nov 5, 2012

If you're US based north Dakota is the place to go. Housing is tight but desperate for workers from what I hear
-
If I had to move out of Edmonton, Red Deer would be my 1st choice.
