Unsure where this 183 days comes from. I spoke directly to ICBC head office & Alberta Registries... if you have ICBC Territory Z, and your primary residence is still BC (i.e. where you file your taxes) - you are covered. According to Alberta Registries... if you do not have a residence in Alberta then you cannot & do not get an Alberta License or insurance. I spent 15 minutes talking to each side and both never heard of this 183 cumulative day rule. However, if you move your primary residence to either jurisdiction, then you have 90 days to change your license & insurance over.

I guess a guy could take a chance & not bother with Territory Z, but I'm off to Grande Prairie so going to get Territory Z to be on the safe side.

Pretty much all the testers I have worked with from 1st rate have been good guys and seemed happy with their jobs, but my interaction with testers is pretty limited. From what I see, rig in iron, record data, when things go south and they have to work it's a frenzy of activity, but mostly watch movies lol. They can also be the gophers and go to guys for consultants. And remember lots of first oil patch jobs are get foot in door, get to know the area and see what else is around and try to find what makes ya happy or pays the most, depending what kinda balance you are looking for. Me, I'll make a few less $$ and enjoy my job.

Eires, that's odd, I spoke to both as well and ICBC told me territory Z covered me but once my vehicle was in another province for more than 183 cumulative days I was not covered. Alberta registries told me the same, I do have an Alberta residence but my principal residence and drivers license is still BC. I insured and registered my 09 ram 1500 in Alberta with my BC residence listed and everything mailed there for... Wait for it...$737 bucks, full coverage and 2 mill liability. In BC with terr Z was $2700, saved 2 grand!!

So yeah, I told the folks at 1st Rate I'm not available till the end of this month. They asked me to get First Aid course done, and call them back whenever I'm ready. I couldn't ask them what position they will be hiring me for, and now I dont wanna go back to ask them that. I don't know. Might end up giving them the wrong impression. If any of you folks know aanything about 1st rate and what this company deals with. Please do gyide me. Should I keep applying in more places or head home now?

Call them and ask what they pay and what the shift is and what the job entails... Don't worry about looking silly, no such thing as stupid questions...

Okay so I just phoned the gentleman who spoke to us earlier. He said work is based out of Saskatchewan. Hotel provided. Something about $40 subsistence (?) and $180 everyday (?) - Work is 12 to 16 hours (when does OT kick in?) - shift is 3 days work or more depending on how much we can work. He said they'll go easy on us the first few days/weeks. I'm clueless here. Is this a good gig as per industry standards? (Not being choosy, I'm taking this up. Just wanna know) Thanks!!

Not sure what to say there, I wish some of the other guys were online to help maybe?? I get $50 sub, which is pay when out on a job to pay for meals. The $180/day pay seems kinda small, a 14 hour day equates to $12/hour... Lame! My job a brand new swamper gets $27/hour and $3000/month guarantee so a 14 hour day would gross $480 (hourly and gaurantee included) plus $50 sub. Also many places don't pay overtime, you aren't in BC anymore ha ha. I think it's because we get our monthly guarantee (base salary) they don't have to pay OT. Keep throwing the resumes out there, my opinion is testers do very little work and barely drive so the pay may reflect that??

Hey James, so you roll with a BC address & Class 1... and were able to insure with an Alberta company? Looks like I got the wrong info. from both ICBC & AB Registries. If that's the case I'll register & insure in Alberta, god I hate ICBC... $330 to insure my motorcycle for 3 months, cost $225 in Alberta for 6 months - kinda figures.

Ya, the big kicker too is that Alberta will accept BC class 1 no probs, just issue you a new license if you relocate, if you came from Alberta to BC with a class 1... Road test! So I am keeping my BC class 1 for that reason and it is and will remain my principal residence. Seriously who could ever leave the okanagan forever?? Ha ha
