I'm still working as a rigger for a local taxi crane company, but also operate cranes now. Mainly operate 30 and 60 ton, but now working on the 120 ton.
Got my apprenticeship registered a few months back and with prior experience they have credited me the hours for my first and second year. All the hours now are being accumulated for my third year. Still have to do the first period in school portion, which they want me to do ASAP.
We are looking to hire a journeyman right now and a rigger (apprentice) maybe this spring.
Persistence pays off. Crane companies like to hire apprentices with their class 1. You need to be flexible as a rigger, operator, and some mechanical aptitude to do general maintenance and repairs. Previous experience running cranes, boom trucks, or pickers can only help your chances.

Hey guys ,
ive read through nearly 300+ pages of this thread and there's a lot knowledgeable guys here so
I need some advice from you guys if could . This is my second time coming back out to GP and
been here 6 days so far and have 2 offers 1 from canyon tech and another from calfrac . Canyon starts
on jan 7th for frac and calfrac on 14th jan also for frac .. My question is who I'll have more job security
from as break up is far off from now and also who would be a better outfit to work for ? Both are 15/6 and both pay scales are pretty much same for most part .. I been racking my brain all weekend on who to go with , any advice be great from you guys would e awesome ..
Thanks a lot -
I don't know anything about canyon, but what I know about calfrac in the past I won't suggest them to anyone I like

Yes, clean class 1. Driving experience, big ugly stuff on/off road, mud/winter driving. A little heavy haul stuff. Nav, lease location, route planning, radio protocol, GODI, HOS, logbook, oilfield exemption, yadda yadda.
Enough well servicing experience in multiple service lines to help set me up for a job. Picker experience at the wellhead, IRP, working around cranes, lines, equipment. Will go where the work is.
All the safety tickets and all that funky jazz.
Not worried too much about the dollars for the medium term, good money will come in due course. No hassles taking a pay cut to change direction. -
Seem to have a high turnover, just my impression. With a few long timers.
Canyon guys out of GP seem to be happy, they are making good coin from recent conversations. Staying quite busy, they told me. Mostly a younger crew with a few older hands. Not many green hats which is probably a good thing if they keep the percentage of trainees low. G
I think I would try Canyon, personally. Just my 2c. Slightly newer equipment from what I see driving around. All these companies get hurting and spring is thinning of the herd season. Lots of warm bodies needed just to keep the machine running. Not much time to make an impression as a green hand TBH between now and spring, but if you work hard, try to look and learn, ask as much as you can. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw if it works out for you.
Good luck. Whatever you choose, it's not forever. -
Great thanks for opinion guys I'm going give canyon a go
