Is it better to go I-40 all the way to Barstow, or drop down at Phoenix on I-17 and take I-10 in? 30 miles difference, I'm just short on the 70 and need to keep the hammer down in as straight a line as possible. I'd rather 30 extra miles at a steady 75mph than 30 less miles having to drop down to 55 on every little hill, I drive a barbie jeep grossing ~80k right now.

If you're short on 70 then you limit the amount of major cities you go through. I would go 40 to Barstow. You have no real resistance til you get to LA.

Go on the 40. There’s a pretty steep and long climb on the 17 south of Camp Verde. Also coming down 17 with 80k, you shouldn’t be driving the speed limit

There is no resistance getting into the LA basin this week or probably for the next few weeks.

Rush hour traffic since the CV shutdown is like what you'd expect normally at 0400 on a Sunday.

Where exactly in the basin are you going?

It's kind of a wash in some cases but if you're going to anything south of lets say Moreno Valley CA then I'd take the Phoenix route..

I-40 to Barstow hands down. This route is all freeway. You can also make alternate routes all freeway by taking I-17 to AZ-303, but that will add about 38 extra miles compared to I-40 to Barstow.

Is he going to LA proper or somewhere else in the hood?

It really depends on exactly where you're going imo.

I’m going with what the OP posted: Los Angeles.

    ultimate destination is Orange

Tracking all freeway but so is I-64 / I-79 through WV, trying to avoid hills and keep it flat and fast as possible.
