I just wanted to tell my experience for those who are looking for a truck school. I did a lot of research on schools and location was the deciding factor for me. I went with Alliance truck driving school in Arden NC. I had a two year degree and got laid off and needed a new career and based on my school experience I feel that it all comes down to how much you apply yourself to what you get out of almost any school. With that said a school is only as good as its instructors. I feel lucky to have had two instructors at Alliance trucking that took the time and was patience with me. The part of my school that I was most happy with was the job placement. Alliance had about 10 companies who came to the school and gave us their "pitch". This is the part I would urge people to take the time and do their own research on trucking companies verse just listening to the recruiters. I have worked for three different companies since school and if I would have took my time more during that part it would have saved me some frustration. I would stay away from company sponsored training it seems I hear more horror stories about it than anything else. My training was good I would say that Alliance did a good job with me and the other people in the class.
Once again we can all complain about different things but its going to depend on how much effort YOU put into your life.

As far as starter trucking companies go these independent training schools feed them anyways. Whether a starter company CDL trains or accepts students from a school is redundant.

These schools also make money off referrals, not just tuition. So don't think you are getting special treatment by getting a special job. All 4" sewer pipes feed the 24" one. :)

Their main concern is getting that CDL in your hand. To me a well rounded school would cover all aspects of today's truck driver. That includes learning the FMCSA regulations, weather, trip planning, load balancing and securement to name a few. Right now most of that stuff a driver learns on his own.

To me a good school is found at a community or technical college with a well thought out training curriculum and not influenced by referrals. Financing alternatives are better there too. Like building a house it all starts from a good foundation.

When it comes down to it all new students have to pay the piper their first year. The majority of new drivers will also change jobs by the end of year one.

I went to alliance truck school in VA. Head instructor was Mr. Cregger. Great guy and a heck of a driver. I would recommend the school to anyone. On the job thing I stayed with one company for 8 years after school I guess I got lucky.:biggrin_255:
