I found a 75 paystar 5000 I can buy for less than scrap price.. I'm gonna use it to move farm equipment with..The guy said it has a 1160 Cat with an Allison auto trans.. I know nothing about Automatic transmissions in a heavy truck and I'm kind of scared of it.. I dont know the trans model.. Are these trans any good? The truck is an old fleet concrete mixer truck and its an all wheel drive model if it makes any difference.. Thanks Jon
Allison Auto ?

The 1160 was Fords badge on a 3208 Cat non-turbo. You're looking at 200 horsepower and gutless. The allisons work fine in a low horsepower app. Could be an AT540?
-
It has to be bigger than an AT540....
Allison's are great, rugged transmissions. That's why almost every ready mix truck and many municipal trucks use them. Just make sure the trans oil is clean and run it.... I sold dozens of these and never had a problem with them. -
What would it be?
-
The IHC's I sold that had AT-540's were usually powered by DT-444's and DT-360's.....smaller engines. -
Now my concern is it will either be weak or will only run 50mph. The truck is awd so thats more weight and more torque needed to turn all the axles.. I think Im gonna pass on it

Buy it and scrap it, you said it yourself that it was less than scrap value.

I bought a 78 transtar cabover with a 290hp Cummins with 9speed roadranger.. It was restored in the mid 90s. Its got all aluminum 24.5 bud wheels.. Fairly nice truck for $2500 I think it will suit me better.. Thanks for all the advice

I always did like those trucks, nice to drive and good handling.
