I'm currently driving as a contract driver for Panther, and now that i'm paying for my own fuel, Idleing makes my wallet hurt, but I have to stay comfortable, and so I'm searching for solutions. The truck is not mine so I'm limited, but I really don't know what options are out there.

The only solutions that I am aware of are the standard APU with a generator and a small diesel engine to generate power and power an A/C compressor either by belt or electricity.

I know there are other solutions out there, but I don't know of them; surely there has to be a solution for a company/contract driver? Maybe solar power with an A/C that uses your trucks current windows or vents? I'm actually Google-ing this also, but not finding much information. I'll keep searching on my own as well, but if someone has some hands on experience, any advice/information would help out a lot :)

    Thank you kindly!

An APU is a smart investment. That or an Espar bunk heater for the winter, which is a fraction of the cost, but useless in the summer months.

Not your truck but you have to pay for fuel? If this the norm for expedited? They must pay well. Is there a place to mount a gas generator?

Currently I make 58% of the contract price which is 1.20 per mile. I also get 100% FSC, which has never been less than .35 per mile. So it does actually pay pretty well.

Hmmm...unfortunately, I don't think there is a place I could mount a gas generator unless I get creative :\ Would something like that be a good idea? How long will those last before I have to fill them up again? If I have to fill it up every day that could get annoying enough not to be worth it :\

with the stock tank it can run anywhere from 8-10 hours depending on load. what a lot of people do is plumb a 2.5 or 5 gal boat tank to it. I'm not very familiar with straight trucks, is there room on the catwalk? Also there is a thread called "rooftop air" that has photos that can give you some ideas for generator installation. Then you would have power to run a stand up office A/C.

There isn't a catwalk on a strait truck :\ at lest not mine, or most I've seen. I will, however, definitely take a look at that thread and see what kind of solutions I can get from there. Thanks much!

I didn't think there was. Yes, he made or bought an aluminum box to mount the generator ti the side rails.

I may try something else. I tried to find that thread, but never could. I may, however, try a solar/wind turbine solution.

    I found this:

    http://www.allaroundcontractingllc.com/

But I can NOT for the life of me get a hold of the guy! In fact, I'm going to start a new thread just for that to see if anyone else has that system, or tried to get a hold of him.

I may venture on a project and try to build a from scratch solar APU Unit. That'd be quite a project, but would save me so much money on fuel.
