Memphis is not a place to stop. I consider myself a worn down warrior but Memphis is one of several places around the USA where you don't stop in trucking or anything in life. If I have a need to go back to Memphis in the future, it will be as much as I can be under my Concealed Carry License and weapons (Colt and a small backup) and so on.
I spent a great deal of time in Memphis hauling out of there for many years of my life and consider myself lucky. But it cannot last.
Your best weapons in defense is to be examining people as you see them, profiling them to a mental health system and threat matrix. If you are fast enough you will be ahead of them mentally and show that you are not prey.
Example. I walk the street downtown, bad guy is on other side, sees me and takes a step to cross the street towards me. I raise the shirt briefly to check the colt he sees it and we will go from there. (There are laws that define my behavior as brandishing but in that moment it's part of my draw if we have to go that far. The classic body language that screams gun to the bad guy is undeniable) Anyone walking in a parking lot, if they are 3 parking spaces (Painted lines) that's 21 feet more or less 7 yards. Plenty to shoot on. If you are in converstation range (Less than 50 feet) you are already in range of something if that was a bad guy with intent against you. And further, examine the tueller drill. Meaning a knifer is 21 feet away, that's about 3 quick giant steps to stab you. Can you draw and take him before he sinks big knife into you?
Finally but not last. situational awareness is key. Looking around examining everything and everyone. If people are interested in YOU... you have a problem already. In order to upset the bad guy's developing plans might be to abandon the fuel stop and pull through back onto the interstate. If they follow then you contact both your dispatch on QC satellite, being followed, bad guys and hit send. Then call the law on 911 and go from there. They will get that sorted pretty quick.
Best solution? never stop in Memphis.

Story sounds a little strange to me as well.
Situational awareness is key, but it doesn't hurt to carry a big stick.
