i was just about to finish up my traning with a company last november when i had a absessed tooth that made me get home to get it fixed.. when i called the company to ask a question a employee told me i was fired because i had to go home... 3 months l8er as the econnomy was in freefall i called the companyand found out i was lied to and i hadent been fired but only needed a form from my doctor stating i could return to work.. but by that time it was too late....
over the past year ive spend a few months unemployed, and the rest of the time employed in a couple non CDL jobs.. as it seemed no starter companies were hiring... now from the posts on the various employment websites it seems companies are hiring again.. so i put my ap in with a trucking company..
i fully expect to be forced to take a refresher corus as i thought it was required... but the next day i get a call from a recruter.. going over my APP and employment history.. and i ask the big question.. "will i need to go take a refresher corus" her reply... "no aslong as you can pass the road test at orientation we will put you on with a trainer"
its been just under a year sence i was behind the wheel of a semi and i know im gona be rusty but i could probibly pass a road test... although i know i need to do some heavy studying of my pretrip and 11/14 hour rules..
but my question to you is am i currently being lyed to? i dont want to mention company names as im sure they all troll these forums and i dont want to blow my chances.. but it is a big company.. and i really need and want this job..
additionaly having had the 4 weeks otr as a tranee last year and having talked to countless drivers in terminals and on the road i know the ins and outs.. i know what BS goes on.. and im fine with it.. ive got no wife or kids to tie me down, im equaly adept functioning at night or durring the day.. i actualy prefer driving at night when its not raining and i could live on the road and be happy.. i have a high stress tolerance and a high BS thresh hold.. im only 29 and evaluating all the pro's and cons being a truck driver is what i see myself as 30 years from now.. in short im addicted to the big rig.. i still dream about driving and have found it impossible to take a job that doesnt involve driving my car.. being confined to a office or other inside work environment has become intolerable to me ever sence my experience driving last year..
as far as the job.. my background and DMV checks both came back clean and im now waiting on them to verrify my employment then they schedjule me for orientation..
additionaly could someone list all the companies who are currently hiring new drivers? incase it doesnt work out with this company. i have my CDL with hazmat.. but no recent experience.. only 1 speeding ticket in the past 3 years 82 in a 65 in my personal car (aquired before i got my CDL), no accidents,
am i being jerked around here?

Each company is different on their requirements. If they say you don't need a refresher course if you pass the road test.... That is exactly what they mean.
You do not know the BS that goes on & you really don't know the in's & out's.outerspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
I was out of a truck from March until last week. No refresher course.
-
Because it was less than 6 months. Co's want 6 months recent. Go over that 6 month window and see what happens...
-
Won't happen. I only left because TA sucks and I had the means to enjoy my summer. Good to know though.

+1. There are guys that go their whole careers and don't know the ins and outs. Transportation is a complex animal that very few will know all about.

Things change everyday... You learn something everyday... You do something stupid everyday... You do something great everyday... You surprise yourself everyday... And you get lucky everyday...
To me there are no in's or out's... It is common sense & how you apply the common sense. -
well.. by ins and outs i meant.. bad dispachers, unofficialy being pushed to run illegal, dealing with trailors that have something missing/broken that the previous driver didnt bother gettin fixed, bad directions from dispatch, time constraints, trafic jams from construction/ accidents, never getting home when promised, being lyed to by the company, dealing with ignorent or allready in a bad mood shipers/receavers, bad drivers in cars and ocasionly other trucks, the list is endless but more or less the inside BS that nobody outside of the industry has a clue about that often causes new and experienced drivers alike to get fed up and quit or do something causing them to be fired..

well all companies have their own set of rules. and in this economy they are not going to rely on just your auto background. you only had the training. you do not have any solo experience. so if a company does hire you, you are going to have to be put with a trainer again. and most of the good ones want 1 year over the road experience.
as for the BS, you will see it at about every company. some are better than others and some are worse. you have to read between the lines and also talk to other drivers.
when i started in '93, i went to 4 companies and all but one would not let me look at the equipment or talk to their drivers.
the one that let me look at the equipment and talk to their drivers i spent 15 1/2 years with.
and another thing to realize is that the industry does not fit all of your requirements that you expect.
there will be times that you will have to drive at night then others during the day. and you will have to drive in rush hour traffic and bad weather. you have to deal with it wether you like it or not.
the world of trucking is nothing like a 9 to 5 job. your hours will vary alot and you have to deal with situations beyond your control.
and dealing with shippers and recievers in bad moods, you must keep a smile and always never piss them off. and believe it or not later on they will remember that and then the next time you are there they will remember that their attitudes did not bother you and you kept a smile on.
as for equipment not being up to par, there are alot of drivers that do not do a full walk around. they take for granted that everything is ok. so when finding a problem you have to notify the shop about it. what i use to do is i would type in and send a message of the problems. including damage to the trailers.
this is known as covering your #####.
if you have a bad dispatcher, you go over their head and ask for another one.
communication is the main thing when working for a company.
