Didnt mean to throw numbers and confuse ya. Maybe Im wrong but sense a little attitude back at me. Only used ft for terms of get some distance between ya. responsible drivers will make sure they have room to come over but the are some that think... he flashed his lights, Im clear. they never check their mirror just that perifial glance for a flash of light, cut over and there goes your bumper/fender. All I was sayin try add some distance to your norm and see if that reduces the number comin over early. Idk how you actually drive just makin pictures from whats said. In all honesty i dont flash til im comfortable with the distance. Its courteousy to me and you.
Am I correct about the thanks signal?

jk Never had any luck with NY but I have had a few officers flash me over, kinda felt like a set up though...flashing headlights = flashing strobe lights
THBatMan8 Thanks this. -
I was taught that during the day (running with headlights off), simply reach up and turn on (one flash) of standard headlights to show clearance is good with me for YOU to come back over. At night (dusk/dawn)...for trucks with single marker/headlight switches, never "go dark and disappear", switch down to markers only and right back up to full lights....this way, the passing truck can see you are still there and where you actually are...also anyone behind won't lose track of your location either.
Thanking a truck for flashing me of the satisfactory clearance...daytime I use my 4 ways, 3 flashes...and when I had a truck without an interrupt at night again the 4 ways. Now a truck with a marker interrupt...everyone has there own little "pattern" or rhythm of marker blinks. I use 4 ways since so many of the older trailers...those marker lights and/or tail lights are just to dim to see during a bright sunshiny day!
And when I flash a passing truck as far as clearance on open highway....I wait till I see their turn signal then flash....this tells me they are either impatient and need to get back over, or they are ready to come back and watching my position. If they are in that much of a hurry and come back without signal and too close for my comfort zone....I am always watching and ready to back out of it.
As for traditional ways....well traditions need to adapt to different applications....one thing still remains....2 flashes of your headlights is telling the drivers going the opposite direction that there is a Smokey close and waiting for another willing driver to accept his "souvenir"!
So you rookies...or those who don't know this application....STOP BLINKING YOUR HEADLIGHTS TWICE....IT MEANS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU ARE INTENDING IT TO BE!!!! -
