Gm, yes i had my fair share of those, i rember this big truck , coming up fast, bright lights on , and your supose too dim your light's, as you got close, nope stayed that way for a good 7 miles , anoy as heck, i let him pass finely as i slowed down and let him pass, as that was the safe thing too do,, but he kinda made me mad ,why didnt dim his light's, when he got by me and in front me, i just reached up grab my spotlight, which was fact mounted too cab and shined it right in mirror or left side, he got the msg by hitting the brakes , but didnt stop, and keep going , and i was ready for rumble,
spoiled my fun , he keep going, must been a mexico truck as i was in southern ca.
Am I correct about the thanks signal?

The whole clearing another truck is only a courtesy anyway. From what I've heard it originated from when trucks ran a lot of 2 lane roads and needed to get over ASAP so they didn't run into oncoming traffic. I still clear everyone but its just a habit now. Plus I'm afraid if I didn't my grandfather would come outta his grave and whoop me for not showing professional courtesy to a fellow driver!
Everett, Mud Dog and otherhalftw Thank this. -
I have a question. I drive a 4-wheeler (read that as not-a-semi) with automatic running lights (read that as "the headlights are on when the car is turned on and in gear") and I try to clear semis to come over if they have their turn signal on to come into my lane and I can tell they have plenty of room to do this. I try to do this by flicking my headlight control to on then off a couple of times but not sure if that actually gives a signal to anyone by actually doing anything. I guess I could ask one of my inlaws to stand in front of the car while it is on and in gear and I do that to see what happens with the headlights (nice to have inlaws that live 100 yards from me LOL). I am asking for a trucker or someone in their family that has a newer car with this type of automatic running lights knows if doing what I do actually does give a signal. And, if it does not give a signal, what could I do as an alternate signal, such as maybe flicking between the left and right turn signals relatively quickly to say there is plenty of room to come over.

but most of the "constant running lighted" vehicles, if you flick the high beam, it does activate the high beams.....but only flash once...no need to be blinking the lights more than once. that driver should be watching in his mirror to see that the clearance needed has been attained. Hopefully you aren't one of those 4 wheelers that after passing a big rig....you move over and slow down.....maintain your speed and keep on going...PLEASE!johnday and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
It should over ride but I'm not sure where you can actually flash trucks over if not idk what to tell ya do do at night of a day brights would be ok I've never been blinded at noon by lights. Lol why I won't own a new vehicle, too many bells n whistles and no convenience knobs. Hope you get help.

The posted speed limit was 70, and my truck is governed at 62, so the LEO didn't have a reason to pull me over.
When the LEO passed me, I stuck my hand out the window and waved a 'thanks' at him, which he waved back at me. Another shocker.Last edited: Aug 28, 2011

Yeah there a few decent LEO's out there. Makes you appreciate the good ones when you find yourself faced with a jerk.
THBatMan8 Thanks this. -

My experience is that most LEO's are decent. But ya, there are a few, very few,,,,,,
