So Ive been thinking about getting my CDL and start OTR then move on to a dedicater or regional route to eventually a local company once I get some miles under my belt. Im 24 years old my old man has been practicing to be a truck driver for my whole life so it kind of in my blood. Ive been to alot of place when I was young riding with him in the truck. I enjoy driving think I would be good at it. But my wife says Im crazy. I live in a small town so my over all bills aint that much If I could clear 400-500 a wk I would be happy. Whats your alls opionons?

That means - 'Honey, for the sake of our marriage, please don't do this.'

    Fair warning.

I would say between the National guard and your wife its probably not a good idea. Unless your wife is going to do it with you. Trucking just doesn't mesh well with families. Newbies just don't realize how long you are actually away from home for and that when you do come home its for a couple days, just enough time to do your laundry and mow the lawn!

Course if you have an extra $6000 lying around and 3 months to waste go for it! Get it out of your system.

I have been driving for over 16 years, have been an owner operator and have also teamed with my wife for quite some time. There is no way I will go get in a truck right now and leave my family. I know exactly what it will entail and how long I will have to stay out to make any money! I love trucking too! So there is an experienced look at it!

Yeah... you better listen to your wife and forget about trucking cause I see a divorce in your future if you dont. Trucking companies have to honor your duty to the National Gaurd so that won't be a problem. I don't know where you live if there are any regional companies I would think there probably are. You don't have to start out with OTR and have yourself staying out 3 to 4 weeks at a time. Most regional companies, even local smaller ones with 100-200 trucks will hire newbies and train you. But realize exactly what home weekends means. You'll get in on a Saturday morning if you're lucky and be leaving right back out on Sunday, and you might get a 34 hr reset.

That's how I've always trucked, regional, home weekly. And for the most part it's not really what my little woman considers quality family time but we deal with it. I became an o/o in order to take time off as needed to help with the lousy hometime and do take off several weeks a year, almost 2 months. But it took several years of sacrifice and toil to get where I'm at and there is even more sacrifice as an o/o. I spend a lot of my "off weeks" dealing with truck issues.

Anyways, sounds like your woman is sending you warnings that you're not paying attention to. It really isn't worth it and I would pass if I was in your shoes. I was single when I started this industry. You say you don't have a lot of bills but have you read what newbies make for the first few weeks of training on average? Read the threads in this forum on that. They are lucky to get $300 a week for the first several weeks. There will also be two, possibly 3 or more weeks of zero while you are at trucking school. Are you financially secure enough to handle about a month and a half of practically no income coming in? Listen to your wife if you love her.
